Clover infesting lawn - when to kill it?
Comments (12)Clover is relatively hard to kill, I have read that this is because of its substantial root system. If you plan to overseed in the fall, I would start with the WBG now, assuming temperatures are not around 90 as already mentioned. I suggest this because it likely will take two or three applications to get it under control, and this takes time, so if you start late it will interfere with your overseeding. In my case, the clover was so thick in spots that the grass has suffered. I don't think it is dead, but will take a few weeks of sunlight and moisture to come back, now that it is no longer competing with the Clover for those things. Ortho has a Clover-specific product that I assume works well, but a few applications of the regular WBG Max has wiped out most of mine. Good luck!...See MoreHomemade Clover Honey?
Comments (42)Nope, it's not honey from bees. This is "honey" as our elders made from sugar during the Depression, for my mom. Here's the recipe Manda proposed at the top of the thread. I just need some idea of how much rose water to use. Any ideas, anyone? Homemade Honey 10 cups white sugar 1 t alum 3 cups water 2 cups fireweed blossoms 1 cup red clover blossoms 2 1/2 cups white clover blossoms METHOD 1. In a large saucepan, bring water, sugar and alum to a boil and boil for 10 minutes. 2. Take off heat. 3. Rinse off blossoms in strainer and drain well (be sure not to leave any green parts on blossoms or honey will be wild or grassy tasting). 4. Stir in blossoms and steep for 3 hours. 5. Remove flowers, strain through cheesecloth if necessary. 6. Reheat to a boil, then pour into jars and seal. NOTES Variation: for a nice twist, try adding some fresh blackberries to the steeping process. It adds a wonderful flavor and a great color. Add approximately 1/3 cup of blackberries or other juicy fruit. Also be sure to squeeze the cheesecloth when you strain the honey to get all the juice and flavor from the berries. Makes 7 x 8 oz / 230 g jars. Time: 3 hours 20 minutes (3 hours preperation, 20 minutes cooking)...See MoreLooking 4 Dutch White Clover Seed
Comments (7)Pete, I hope I didn't offend you. I just didn't want you to "enjoy" an experience similar to one I had with an intensely unpleasant neighbor that used to live next to me. I completely agree with you with the desire to not dump all those chemicals on my lawn and into the ground water. Before we attempted to suppress the creeping charlie, which if you think about it is actually pretty when it blooms, we had little tree frogs in the yard. Now we don't. I also don't believe in watering my grass. I, unfortunately, live in a town of what the hubby and I call Lawn Shavers. They mow the grass off at 1 1/2 or 2 inches then water it when it browns out in the summer. The same guy that used to come and swear at me about the clover in my yard had a yard full of dandelions and creeping charlie. Go figure! Maria...See Morewrong clover
Comments (2)It's hard to tell for sure, but the middle picture looks like you have some black medic. Some of the leaves look like they have the white ring in the leaf, so you may have both dutch white clover and black medic. I don't think anything other than hand pulling is very effective on black medic. I've tried using a weed hound, but it's tough to find the center of the plant because it spreads all over the place. Here is a link that tells how to differentiate clover from black medic and yellow woodsorrel (another clover lookalike)....See Moreesobofh
