Need ideas for old screen door

Hello! We have a screen door that we replaced last year that I would like to do something with but I need help. It is a full screen, wood framed, painted white. Any ideas??

It wasn't too long ago someone posted a pic of a screen door they put in between the property lines of their home and her daughter/son's home and the grandchildren just love that they have to "open the door" and step through to Grandma's place. It was so darling, painted a lovely color blue with a chair or planter next to it. In the search box at the top of home forum page, type in "screen doors" and I'm sure that msg will come up and several others for you to check out.

Not a screen door, but I recently found a glass storm door and decorated it as shown. I think something like this using your screen door, placed on your front lawn and then decorated for fall/halloween would look simply darling. You could do a fall wreath in the middle with some mums, other fall flowers, some pumpkins, cornstalks, etc. surrounding the bottom of it.

Love your display! My DH has a trunk that looks like yours. His was his GF and is over 100 years old. Does your trunk have a history?

I'm assuming they are around 6 ft tall. No way they are going to be "freestanding" & survive wind. At the top you would need to attach them to steel pole or framework that is attached to house. I've seen them used as corners on a patio & with canvas type fabric on the frame so can "close off" 1 section. Even if you had several the height would make them unstable in wind. You could use a galvanized piece available at Home Depot or Lowes "U" shaped pieces but with squared corners to slip over the bottom in 4 places, painted to match & then bolted into the cement I think some come with bolt. Talk to the store & they could help you on that. I secured my gate that way, or course existing cement you either have to cut out concrete or add extra. Quality of doors would have lot to do with trying to do anything with them. If they are not very strong & well painted with outdoor paint that would stand up to the weather, wouldn't be worth going to all the trouble. Could Google in "louvered doors for patio" & see what comes up, might give you better idea of what you can do with them. Good Luck!

"Sand off as much of the rust as you can. Apply a rust reformer product, prime and paint." Only loose rust should be removed before using a conversion coating. The coating needs rust to react and bond with. A lite pass with a wore brush to remove loose material, then appply the coating (auto paint stores are a good source of quarts of the solution). The coating react with the rust to form iron phosphate, a stable black coating. You can then paint over the coating. Avoid using water based (latex) paints as they can create additional rust. Krylon type spray paint works well, or even auto body spray paint.

Removing Fiberglass Screen on Old Sliding Patio Door

On the sliding screen door for my older patio door I need to replace the fiberglass screen. The first step however is to remove the old fiberlass screening which seems to be (nicely) held in place by a thin bead of adhesive/caulking applied in the groove where the spline would normally be. Once I get the adhesive out I imagine they'll be no problem installing a new screen using new splinbe in the groove as usual. I hope/assume I can just peel the old adhesive out by poking in the groove and the pulling the old screen out etc. Any one have some advice - want to make sure I can do this properly before I start ripping the old screen out. Amy and all, just thought Id mention that this old house forum originated a bunch of years ago for people taking a more preservation or restoration approach and already on the same page about things like vinyl windows and saving original plaster so we could talk about other stuff. Of course a lot of projects ,maybe even most, fall somewhere in between strict preservation and total gut job so there is bound to be some overlap. IMHO the best renovations (and the ones that retain most value in $$$ terms) are ones that preserve the historic elements and layout as much as possible and any upgrades changes dont compromise the integrity of the house and blend in seamlessly. (A kitchen/bath addition can be a great solution because the plumbing and everything can be done w/o messing with the rest of the house.)

Ha - yeah my trunk has a history - it's called "curb shopped" - too funny. You made my evening by giving me such a good laugh, thanks!!

Thank you for the compliment on my display using the trunk and old storm door. I really like the country/prim look.

I recently was looking up some things on this forum and found someone's pic of a screen painted like a quilt. Copy and paste the pic someplace where you can enlarge it so you can see the detail better. Its Beautiful!! Barbara.
