Old louvered doors for freestanding privacy screen.

Hey, all,

I came by a free pair of louvered doors that I'd like to use as a privacy screen on the concrete pad in my garden. My one concern is, what could I use as "feet" on the bottom of the doors so that the screen will be freestanding (and won't tip over on windy days) and the wood won't soak up rain from the pad? Any suggestions?

I'm assuming they are around 6 ft tall. No way they are going to be "freestanding" & survive wind. At the top you would need to attach them to steel pole or framework that is attached to house. I've seen them used as corners on a patio & with canvas type fabric on the frame so can "close off" 1 section. Even if you had several the height would make them unstable in wind. You could use a galvanized piece available at Home Depot or Lowes "U" shaped pieces but with squared corners to slip over the bottom in 4 places, painted to match & then bolted into the cement I think some come with bolt. Talk to the store & they could help you on that. I secured my gate that way, or course existing cement you either have to cut out concrete or add extra. Quality of doors would have lot to do with trying to do anything with them. If they are not very strong & well painted with outdoor paint that would stand up to the weather, wouldn't be worth going to all the trouble. Could Google in "louvered doors for patio" & see what comes up, might give you better idea of what you can do with them. Good Luck!

I would take a wire brush to them, then clean off the dust. Spray them first with the new "sealer" out. Then spray paint them the color you want. BUT a lot of people on these forums are saying that a brush-on will last longer than a spray. I have no personal experience on that subject. I hesitate to say it was Kilz spray, cause I did not see the name on the can they were holding on one of the home improvement shows. The sealer should help if you have oil paint and want to put on water based on it...or vice versa.

I saw it on the Old House Web forum. I was going to build a satellite gazebo, but my dish was only an 8 footer so there wasn't that much room in it. Then I remembered her porch so I went back to her website and even tried to find more pictures of other sitting areas. Nothing came close to this. I don't have the funds to build a porch off of my back door so I think this will be a great solution and can put it in a better spot. I haven't been on the Garden Junk forum in a long time. I come back every now and again to read some of the posts. This is still a great site to find and share new ideas for the yard.

I am also in the process of adding a built in closet to my master bedroom. I lost a walk in when I remodeled the bathroom years ago. We started out with a bookshelf/media unit that my husband was going to build and ended up at a cabinet maker and adding closets/drawers. Its not inexpensive, but I was surprised at how reasonable it actually was. We chose cherry with raised panel doors. I can only imagine how much more reasonable it would have been if we'd chosen paint grade with less drawers. We had the same unit priced by a well known closet company and they wanted 4x more money!! I was floored! In 14 feet I'm doing a 24 inch depth with a closet at each end, a total of 12 drawers, open shelving and a place for a flat screen. Cabinet companies in our area are hurting. Might be worth at least having someone price it, plus they will draw it out for you and then at least you've got a plan that you can do yourself to save money. We'll be installing our own which will save some money. I'm excited to add the storage and get rid of some old furniture!!

Ritu Ganghi, we wound up getting a sub zero built in for nearly $12,000!!! the option was this or to rennovate kitchen to accomodate a free standing fridge. There would not have been room to walk in our kitchen due to cabinet and center island placement with a free standing fridge. We figured a kitchen reno would be triple the cost of the sub zero, so we went for it. i have to say, we really love it!
