free standing porches

On another forum there is a woman who has a beautiful yard and a really neat free standing porch she constructed out of leftovers and old church looking windows. It's really pretty. Has anyone here made something like this or do you know of any more pictures like it? When ever I say " oh honey come look at this" he already knows what's coming next......Can ya build me one???? LOL

Katkin, You got it. Thunbergia mysorensis. Anyone have it? Anyone know where to get it? I was so tempted to pocket a couple seeds, but restrained myself. Hate to be the idiot who ignored all laws and common sense to bring in the next beast to eat the Everglades. I was sorely tempted by some broms I saw in the jungle too. With this vine, I particularly loved the way it flowered inside the arbor. So many flowering vines used on arbors leave a view inside of just woody stems. The arbor in Antigua had a tiled roof, really more of a free standing porch, about 10 feet high and open on all four sides. The flowers hung down even in the center, where it wouldn't have gotten much sun ever, and there wasn't a single flower in sunlight at noon, so I figure it's pretty sun-shy. I'd build a little arbor if I could grow this. Where? I have no idea, but I've spent the morning rearranging my garden plan in my head to see if I could fit one next to the pool. And Solstice, yep his name is Niko. He's a rescue pup, so we don't know anything about his parentage, but my dad joked on meeting him that he appeared to be part palomino pony and the alternate name stuck too. Actually, we think he's part Dane, part hound. He's almost nine months old, about 85 pounds and pure fun punctuated by the moments of "Niko! You didn't really just eat that brom I paid $15 for?!?" (and you can substitute brom and change the price for any number of things - pillows, bottle of saline solution, ballpoint pens, a cell phone, socks, the bag the cow manure was once inside of. pure fun alright.)

We did that. We were careful to have the deck behind the garage where there were no rooms, so the whole back side...southern side...was full daylight. From the front, it's a one-story house, but from the back, it's a 2 story. With this design, we gain 4 degrees in temp in the winter just from the sun. The lower level, we don't heat or cool (though we have facility to do so) and it maintains temps of 60 to 78 degrees year round. Scroll down in attached thread to see the floor plan. I would have the same layout as tag_singer's; across from the toilet and sitting in the corner. It would be closest to the left hand wall though, while hers is on the right. From what I can tell, TP holders go on either side, just depending upon the layout of the bathroom. The problem now is that the current TP holder literally prevents me from putting any type of trash container there except the tiniest one, since the holder sticks out from the side of the cabinet and you can't fit a wastebasket in there. Even when the wastebasket is facing the other way, it makes it pretty tough to get the hand towel in there, so many of them end up on the floor. I am planning a shower a couple of weeks from now, and 35 or so ladies will be here....the current wastebasket will likely need to be emptied after an hour or so, LOL. I am laughing at myself here....never thought I would put so much thought into such a small detail!!

No, never really thought about it being cold. Maybe on cold days, but concrete stays at about the temperature of the outside. We get afternoon sun, so it can heat up. I spend most of my time on the porch in the early mornings. We have been in our home almost 7 years, and just recently bought an area rug for the porch. The walls are a stucco look alike over concrete board. Re-sealing is very easy! I use a mop or sealer pad and a small jug of sealer from Lowe's. Just vacuum, clean and then mop each square with sealer, in even strokes. Let dry 24 hours and it's done.

I think she use to post here...any way, I fell madly in love with this years ago and put it in our GJ Inspiration album. The Misc. one.
This little porch is just so attractive and I wish I had a hunky handy-dandy guy to build me one. LOL. I'm sure my DH wouldn't care as long he could stay on the golf course.

I saw it on the Old House Web forum. I was going to build a satellite gazebo, but my dish was only an 8 footer so there wasn't that much room in it. Then I remembered her porch so I went back to her website and even tried to find more pictures of other sitting areas. Nothing came close to this. I don't have the funds to build a porch off of my back door so I think this will be a great solution and can put it in a better spot. I haven't been on the Garden Junk forum in a long time. I come back every now and again to read some of the posts. This is still a great site to find and share new ideas for the yard.

beautiful gardens. I wonder what state she is in? what climate?
I included a link for the same porch, only it's been painted.
Green isn't a favorite color for me, so I think I like the porch before it was painted. But it looks nice with all the plants and everything.

Thanks Kat. I kinda like that color on her porch. I'm glad you posted that view. I'm trying to figure out what kind and size lumber I need.

I think she just painted the pillars and the new fence and the tops of the porch rails. I think the balusters and everything else is still "natural aged".

It sure is a beauty.

I pass by a free standing screened in porch on my trip from my house to my mom's. it is pretty cool. About 60 ft from the house, but painted the same.

My old house has 4 porches, but I wouldn't mind having a freestanding one. Instead of a gazebo perhaps. someday, haha

Hooray, another Kathy. Do you think you would be able to take a photo of that porch on the way to your mom's house? I wish I had a back porch so this free standing one is looking better all the time. I found a web site that calculates all the boards and everything you need to build a free standing deck, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out what I need for one with sides and a roof.

What a cute idea and it looks like it would be cheaper to build than a gazebo. I like it both ways - au naturel and painted green. I like her addition of the picket fence too. Hmmmm ... now I'm getting ideas!

Great idea for some shade in hot climates & great for just resting while gardening. Put a small insulted cooler with an ice pack & large cool drink & bowl of melon slices & sit it on that barrel. Love how she had plants that filled in so well & the pink color of hanging ones. The little picket fences really tie it all together. Chairs are perfect touch of yesteryear! Love those windows. Going to tell my DS to have a look at both pics. Thanks, Jan
