Coating for mower deck

I just purchased a John Deere X304. I was wondering if there is some product to coat the underside of the deck. Something to help with the grass sticking and also as a rust proofer. I wondered if something like they use in the bed of a pickup truck bed. You can now purchase a gallon for under $100.00, or am I just wasting my money and do it the old fashioned way and scrape and clean it now and then, Thanks.....

Wal-Mart. Auto section. Preston brand spray silicon in a yellow can. Under $2 per can. Spray it down a few times before you mow, then every time you clean the deck. Works pretty good.

What i did and so far it's working. On an older model Troy bilt rider i took the deck off, removed the three blades and spindels. Pressure washed the deck let it thourghly dry and had a friend spray it with some leftover liquid bed liner. This was last fall and so far it is holding up pretty well. I used it on leaves last fall, and have mowed twice so far this spring. After each use i use a blower to clean underneath. Not sure how long it will last.

Only 3-4 times? Surely this recommendation must be published somewhere. Could you provide a link or a copy of that mulching standard so I could forward it to the engineers at Kubota? I'm sure other companies would like a copy of that standard as well. They must be going by an outdated requirement that doesn't limit the number of cuts for mulched grass. How do you propose I test my deck to see if it meets the standard? I'd hate to blame Kubota for the sticking grass only to find out later they are in compliance with the "no more than 4 cuts" rule. All this time I thought that thick, juicy, healthy grass was the problem. Come to find out my deck is exceeding the allowed cuts per blade of grass!!

Thanks for the kind words, and as you pointed out it really all depends on the money.....i was shocked at how well the electrolysis worked. Large pieces of metal, that i thought was solid and wouldn't budge with a screwdriver, fell right off after several hours. You can see the "pits" left over from rust that had "grown" and was solidly attached, giving the false impression of strength/structure. I've got several tools soaking in the tank right now, should be able to fix them up tonight. I realize the deck may not be perfectly safe, meaning if I hit a rock or something it could come flying through a weak part. The area around where the spindle housing bolts is solid, as is most everything (except where you see all the holes). At the very least i learned about electrolysis in undertaking/researching this little repair. Should be mowing in a few days, paint it tonight, maybe get it back together tomorrow we will see.

ALSO::: If you store yer machines inside a shed, or old frame garage, or any place where the critters kin get in, Go buy a box of stinky clothes dryer softener sheets, and stuff a couple in around and near the engine area. WHY!? The mice and other 4 legged critters love to make their nests in under the flywheel covers on an engine. They make their terlets down in the cylinder fins, and stuff nesting materials in that area, to make their winter naps long and comfy! When you go to start the engine in the Spring, if you didn't have those sheets in it, the mice, or whatever, will most likely have eaten the insulation off the spark plug wire, and it won't start or run. I opened one engine up, to find Mama Mouse and 4 off-spring nesting all comfy, around the spark plug wire area, and the plug wire as bare as a new-born's Butt!

Silicone keeps most dry debris from sticking to coated surfaces, while oil based sprays like WD-40 attract dirt and debris. I use it on clean or new mower decks, trimmer shafts, snow blower chutes with good results. It a good corrosion prohibitor, plus it does make any cleanup easier.

Just hose off the underside each time after mowing before the grass has a chance to dry and you will significantly reduce the chances of corrosion.

my manual specifically states not to hose off the underside of the deck. maybe the grass that doesn't come off soaks the water and promotes rust.

I'm always trying out new stuff - the latest is a spray can of 'lubricant' called 'Jig-A-Loo'. The stuff is loaded with high solvents that clean, then evaporate. If then wiped down, nothing visible is left, but it's very slick - completely dry but feels like it's coated in Teflon. I've been trying to find applications for it but the first thing that came to mind was deck treatment. Haven't tried it there yet because my decks both have a pretty good build-up, but if I ever clean them I'll give it a try. Ideally you would use it on a new mower and keep it clean. I got it at Wal Mart in the auto section. I put it on some scissors; the next time I used them to cut strapping tape while making a big shipping carton, the adhesive did not stick to the blades. If anything gummy gets on scissors or a knife, this is the stuff. The solvents are pretty active, though, and can affect certain paints and plastic materials (but not the baked-on paint of a mower deck). I can't tell what's in it that makes it so slippery but it does state 'no oil, grease, wax or detergents'. For those who play with guns, it is absolutely 'the berries' for cleaning/lubing the inside of magazines with no effect on primers and no dust collecting. I can see it for cleaning and slicking up anything on a mower that you don't want to collect grit; cables, mechanisms, adjusters, plastic wheels, etc.
