There are a few species that are self-fertile, but most need a non-clonal companion in order to set fruit. Beyond that, not all passiflora species produce edible fruit, and most hybrids do not. When you say you have a "Purple Passion Flower" I'm wondering what you mean. I assume this was what the person giving you the seeds called them? On eBay, this usually refers to p. edulis, the commercially grown vine that produces the purple fruit. Is this what you have? If so, be warned that edulis probably won't survive a zone 5 winter if planted unprotected in the ground. You might be better off getting a large pot(s) and planting them there so they can be moved to shelter during colder months. And getting 6 of 9 to germinate is a good success rate. When your plants are ready to move outside, don't give them full sun right away. Morning sun and partial shade should be started early on in order to harden them off. Passis start as understory vines when sprouting in the wild and climb above the other plants as they grow. I fried a bunch of seedlings last year in direct sun because I hadn't realized this. Hi - I successfully started 3 plants from seed back at the beginning of June (Maypop and Blue Common). They are currently under a foot tall and I'm wondering how long it takes to go from seedling to actually getting fruit. I am in Chicago (zone 5) so I'm wondering if this will go anywhere before the frost sets in late October/early November. Any thoughts? Did I start them too late? rooting in water is much easier than germinating the seeds! Some of them take varied temps and months to germinate. We don't notice when they're hiding in the lawn but in a trap of seed starter it's for ever. I dropped some vines that I'd cut off with the string trimmer into a vase of water about a month ago. I need to go to a pot of bigger vase, the one I have is almost full of roots.

trianglejohn. i get the same thing with Incarnata ... runners tend to sprout up in different areas, sometimes 30ft from the plant. also, i remember reading if you have problems getting them to fruit, restrict the roots. mine (P Incarnata) would not fruit at first, so i grew a cutting in a 5gal bucket, and it produced 2 fruit 2 years in a row. the vine was never over 12ft long. the Edulis will not fruit now. i get a couple of flowers, but no fruit. - this past winter only had 1 night at 32F. the plant lost leaves and such, but was still fairly large in spring, and took off again. its over 2 years old, and must have 80ft of vines. its in a front planter, but the roots could be going under the driveway, or, under the house. maybe it just keeps trying and cant find a spot ? i keep cutting back the new growth hoping that will promote flowering, but - nada... i give it fish emulsion and sometimes worm tea. i may try to transplant it into a 15gal and keep the roots contained.
