LB 10323 Surges when brake cable pulled. Fine when not.

Hi all,

Troubleshooting certain things on an 8-year old 10323 (see below) I've removed the safety wire from the brake to the ignition module which led me to believe the bale handle would be useless. Well, when the mower's running if I let go of the handle the mower runs perfectly. If I pull on the handle, it starts surging (surges while mowing or not, and while using the propel handle or not). Why is that??? Am I ok using it this way?

For some context:

It started surging a couple years ago and I rejetted the carb and turned into a whole new machine. This past year the ignition module conked out, replaced it and we were good again.

Well, diagnosing the ignition module I messed up the recoil unit by attempting to start so many times. So I've been starting her up with a drill. (Finally found a reasonably priced replacement on fleabay just today.) Anywho... when I got the new ignition module, the surging returned. I spaced it to a business card's width. I also have a filter and shut-off in line. I removed these to troubleshoot, but the issue is still there. By the way, the brake cable is shot (frayed, rusted, casing split at parts), I've just ordered a new one, but I'm still wondering what role does that thing play, and if I'm not unknowingly messing something else up by mowing this way.

You called it the 'brake' which is correct. When you release the engine/blade control bail, a strong spring forces a brake shoe against the engine flywheel. At the same time, a switch cuts off the ignition. The brake is there to stop the engine/blade as soon as possible. If you are operating the mower with the bail released and the ignition cut-off disabled, what remains of the engine brake shoe is trying to stop the engine, which is powerful enough to overcome it. This puts a load on the engine as if it were in thick grass, which opens the throttle, causing the engine to go into 'power mode' which results in the smooth running 'power hum'.
When you engage the engine/blade control bail as in normal operation, the load is removed and the engine returns to 'idle mode' in which surging is normal. It should return to 'power mode' when mowing presents enough of a load to slow down the engine and let the air vane open the throttle.
So, yes, you are messing up by not using the bail when the engine is running because the brake assembly can cause excessive wear on the flywheel, and having the ignition switch disabled is unsafe.
It's possible that during all the work, the air vane somehow became jammed to some extent and is no longer free enough. Remove the air filter with the engine off and see if the throttle plate is in the wide-open position, which is correct. Push the air vane over about halfway and release it - it should move freely and snap back into position.
A 'rich' condition cab cover up many problems, which is well known in auto mechanics, and the same holds true for the Dura Force engine. You can over-jet it to force it to have a smooth, 'burbling' idle, but in fact there is no need for that. It's obvious that it responds to a load by running in 'power mode', so it's doing what it should. Otherwise, possibly the new jets have gotten clogged to some extent over the last few years of use.

I'll be checking the vane and reporting back. Will definitely stop "driving while braking" from now on... however, now I'm wondering, when I reattach the ignition cutoff wire, it surges (thanks to your explanation I understand why: the engine is not under significant load)... but it still surges except under the very very thickest grass. It surges far worse than even before the rejet. I have a Bahia grass which is not very thick nor dense when cut at usual heights. After the rejet this mower was just absolutely a dream for two seasons, and these probs didn't start till this year when I had the coil then recoil and cable issues. I was somehow concerned that a faulty coil might cause some of this craziness, or that the brake cable not travelling properly would cause some of this.
But now I'm thinking that after checking the vane a nice cleaning of the jets would probably be good (the filter I installed was at the end of the last "good" season) so maybe it is gunked up in there.
Is Seafoam a good idea or should I just take it all apart and have at it with carb cleaner?

Replace the coil as previously stated. I never had much luck wasting time baking old ones. Until something better comes out, we are stuck replacing the stock ones. Regarding the surging, it is a common problem for the lean Duraforce carb but easily corrected. Take that pilot jet out and make sure the tiny orifices are clean. Use some real thin wire, like a single piece of stranded wire. Then reinstall snug, not loose. I would pull the carb off (only takes a minute!) and remove the four screws on the bottom and pull off the float cover. The main jet has a cup screen on it which pulls right off. Clean the main jet with the strand of wire as well and blow it out with air. Reinstall cup screen, float cover and carb. This should cure the surging. If you still have some surging, you can open them up a hair with a numbered drill set. This procedure has been discussed to death here as well as other sites. But if you get to that point and cannot find through search, repost and we will give you the add'l info.

No dis - just engineering analysis. If a Gator blade is standard weight, I could see using one if I can't get the factory blades any more, particularly if its just like the Toro blade. Before I realized the disadvantages of heavy blades, I put a 'Viper' on a used mower I reconditioned for someone, and it worked very well - still in use several years later with the same blade. That thing was about 3/16". A heavy blade also has advantages, such as an increased 'flywheel effect' making the engine more resistant to slowing in thick cutting, but once it does slow it will be harder to accelerate back to speed. It also is obviously tougher and thereby more resistant to bending, but then again the force of an impact would be transferred entirely to the crankshaft, possibly causing significant engine damage. I just like to stick with OEM on the premium mowers I use. Sometimes the engineers really do know what they're doing. I cringe every time I hear of someone putting a heavy blade on a Lawn-Boy with the long crankshaft extension to clear the muffler or transfer tube box - that really creates quite a bending moment on that long crank. I also think about increased wear on the lower main bearing. Maybe this is all just speculation, but I stay away from them, particularly since the original blades work so well. Take the Honda 'Quadracut' system for example - two blades, but they're thinner, tougher steel than usual to keep the weight down. That's good engineering.

mark, i'm a big fan of the old hondas. i've never had a problem with grass building up to a point it stops the engine. are your wheels raised to the highest level? when the grass is extra tall, what i do is take a bungee cord and attach it so the rear door is open and the grass just shoots out, be careful not to be running over foreign objects. wear sturdy pants and safety glasses. you can clamp a mat or something to the cross bar on the handle to deflect the clippings. if you're bagging, make sure your bag is clean.

Lots of opinions, so I'll offer mine. First, the surging is a fuel metering effect and has nothing to do with the ignition. Since your mower is basically starting when you want it to, the CD pack (coil) at least is functioning but might be starting to weaken. It is common on the later LBs to have to replace the coil every few years. Does the engine surge when under a load when actually mowing? If so, it is running too lean and has to be fixed. If it just surges when not mowing, no repair is indicated, but metering jet enlargement would still provide smoother running. The assumption here is that you are moving the throttle lever, right after starting, off the 'choke' position and into the full-speed position, and that you might play around with it some to make sure it's off 'choke' and as high as it can get without going into 'choke'. Surging is a very predictable and 'normal' effect on these engines because they are leaned-out from the factory to meet EPA requirements. However, the normal enriching under load usually smooths it out. 87 octane is the minimum acceptable fuel. I prefer mid-grade (or half regular, half premium) because the fuel loses volatiles in the can (when you open it on a hot day, the vapors shooting out are the good stuff) and to a greater extent in the vented mower fuel tank. With mid-grade, you stand a better chance of retaining the minimum octane for the duration of the fuel. Additives: I use the following in my 2-cycle tools and also used it in my 2-cycle LBs when I had them, two of which had the Duraforce engine: At least 1 oz/gal of Marvel Mystery Oil in addition to the regular mix oil (up to 4oz/gal is okay), and 1/2 oz/2 gal of Sta-Bil 'Marine' stabilizer/cleaner for Ethanol-blended fuels. This is good whether or not you use alky fuels. Use of governor adjustment to mitigate surging: this has been effective for many owners. First, you have to determine if the air vane moves freely and snaps back when released. With engine off, remove air filter and observe throttle plate in carb in the wide-open position. Push air vane over and release to see that it snaps back to wide open. You should have a tachometer for this but you can make a small adjustment without it. Reach to the base of the air vane and find the round knurled disk at it's base - this is the governor tension preset. Give it four clicks clockwise. Replace filter and cover and start engine - use the mower to mow for at least five minutes. Evaluate engine speed and performance, including idle speed, to see if further increase in tension is warranted. The engine will increase RPM as the disc is turned clockwise and decrease with counter-clockwise turning. You don't want to over-speed the engine, but I don't think it's within the range of the preset to do so - you probably will only get 500 or more RPM max. Many, if not most, of these mowers apparently came from the factory with unusually low engine speeds, which tends to magnify the surging problem. I have also personally observed several owners who did not know to pull the throttle lever off 'choke' after starting, which really screws up the mowing experience - if you're getting clouds of smoke, heed this.

Yeah, the gas filter might be clogged up. Otherwise you'll probably have to clean the carb/jets.

Thanks for the post. I think it matters a lot. Not mowing the lawn can result in heavy fines, even jail time.
