Problem with green wire and brake on Toro

I have a Toro personal pace that would not start. It was not getting any spark. However, I have narrowed it down the the green wire going to the brake. If I disconnect the green wire from the coil it will start. But will not stop without pulling the plug wire. Everything looks fine mechanically but hey I'm no professional. About the only thing that looks odd is the actual brake pad. Seems very thin but I don't know what a new one looks like. It is my fathers mower, who at 87 tends to go once around the yard and then takes a break ( He will not let me mow until mid summer ). The brake gets a workout. Does anyone have a suggestion? The mower is on it's third season.

If it would appear that if the cable pulled a tad more the switch wouldn't close then a likely cause is the cable itself. Especially if the brake switch seems fine mechanically as you say. If you need further help, please post the 5 digit model # and first 2 of the serial. The number is at the left rear of the mower deck under the bag door if a steel deck model.

Thanks for the suggestion. Although, now I'm really confused. I took your advise and made the cable pull a little more. It worked. Then I put everything back together like it was normally to make sure it would not start. The thing is, it started just fine. This same problem with a lack of spark happened a few weeks ago. Changed out the spark plug and everything worked for a couple of weeks. Forward to this week and lost spark again and narrowed it down to the brake. Is there something that could be loose in the brake workings that I cannot see? My guess is whatever is wrong this week was the same thing from 2 weeks ago. Just messing with the mower got it working again.

The "slop" may be either a loose blade (tighten the blade retaining bolt) or a loose/sheared woodruff key in the crank adapter that the blade bolts to (replace the 1/4" key). The crank itself wallowing around in its lower bearing support indicates bigger problems and the need to tear it down for inspection/rebuild. If you do have the Suzuki 47PZ2, you have a rare bird indeed. This was the first year of this engine series (1983) and the only year to use mechanical points triggered ignition. The following years 1984-2003, the 47P used solid state ignition, which used a small transistor mounted in the coil casing to fire the ignition ..which was prone to heat/vibration fatigue and often failed - see other threads on here & elsewhere about expensive 47P coil replacement and attempts to save them by heating them in an oven ..all thanks to that dime sized transistor that you don't have to worry about.

I have a problem just like this one my toro was running pretty good only thing was you had to pump it everytime u started it even if you just shut it off for a second after running it for 30mins my partner decided to clean the ball out now the pump leaks when u pump it and for a day we were pouring gas in the carb to get it started now after we do that it just stalls out im not sure what he did and either is he i wish he would have left it alone the season is almost over this isnt my post so if anyone has any advice for me please email me at gballer823@gmail.com i am going to try and get it fixed myseld tomorrow afternoon thank you. The "kill" wire should go to ground, from the ignition connector, or the blade brake. If that wire had come off, the engine would continue to run, while the blade brake would be applied to the flywheel, and that may have been what caused the problem of heap big smokes, and a red hot condition in the top of the engine! By blade brake, i mean the assembly that pushes a brake shoe against the flywheel, to stop engine rotation/blade rotation. I don't think there's any problem with the spark plug and air filter replacement. They probably could use a change after 13 months of operation.

Okay, the wiring problem has been taken care of, but their was additional problems with either the brake or the clutch, possibly just the brake if the clutch kind of works the brake pad as well. On one occasion I pushed in the clutch, shifted into neutral and felt the gear shift come out of gear as put the gear shift into neutral. When I let off the clutch the motor seemed to bog down a little and I heard a squealing sound so I put the clutch back in. I shut it off and looked at the clutch and brake pad area to see if the brake looked to be in the braking position, it kind of looked like it was. I started it back up and messed with it some more, till finally it went into neutral or the brake came loose. I've always had to rock back and forth as I shifted gears at times, so that's one thing I did while it was in neutral as I slowly let off the clutch I rocked back and forth. That seemed to help. Sometimes it does this even if I don't use the brake but use the clutch to come to a slow stop.

Now I go out and it will not start, no spark. Disconnect the green wire, still will not start. Is the coil going bad? Can it do this intermittently?

Give the area around the flywheel a scrub with a scotch bright or it may just be you knocked out your spark plug again with all thay pulling and not starting my old push used to do this and I ended up taking the magneto off of another scraped mower and it worked just fine the break cut off sould be simple so I don't think its somthing you cannot see

New spark plug, flywheel has been thoroughly cleaned, and both properly gaped. Still won't start. It has to be the coil doesn't it? But why would it do this intermittently.

They do that at times. If you've got a magnet in the flywheel- you should have spark if the coil is good.

Well, now with the new coil, everything is working fine. Wouldn't have been so bad if it had just died a proper death the first time. Thanks for the help.
