a question about lawn topsoil

How deep should my topsoil be? I am having a very hard time getting a good looking lawn. My latest effort lasted about six weeks before it started to die off. While I was doing a little digging looking for any evidence of grubs as a cause, I was noticing just how thin the topsoil is. On average, there is about 1 inch of dirt, then red clay. Now I am thinking this may be a big reason why I am not having much success. Oh yea, I have not found any grubs. I have also been adding lime because there are many pine trees and wateroaks bordering the lawn area, and I suspected a large acid content to the soil. My azaleas seem to love it. Despite trying to properly water and fertilize, I seem to be getting no where. So, I am asking, is the thin soil a factor?

Oh yes, here is a pic. :
