Bug control on St. Augustine Lawn

What is the best time to use a bug control on St. Augustine Grass in Central Florida? Also has anyone had a good experience with a particular product. I have used Bayer and others with no noticable difference. Any ideas or opinions would be appreciated as I recently put down 3000 sq. ft. with some Scotts Bonus S

What bug problem do you have? If it's fire ant that is really bothering you, take a look at Over N Out. One time application for the year. It's same stuff that you use on pets for flea and tick control.

transplantsteve, the short answer is "Whenever you have a bug infestation that you cannot accept". When all appears well, soap flush the lawn in a few random locations to determine if a problem exists. If problem areas appear, soap flush those to determine that insects are the cause. Fipronil appears to be a very effective insecticide; commercial applicators favored it when I worked at Lesco.

Brizzy, I will attempt to answer your question. First, do a search for "organic controls + chinch bug". Some good information to be found there. Now some additional thoughts: 1. It is important that organic gardeners study their property daily looking for and treating problems as spotted. Every type of mowed lawn grass, northern or southern, provides a welcoming home to chinch bug. They are not fussy. 2. The three common ways that they are transported into a yard is they are blown on the wind from a neighboring property or arrive on mowing equipment by contract lawn care companies. However, the most common way is on southern grown, balled and burlaped shrubs and trees. Usually the first signs of lawn cinch bug will be spotted during the summer heat just outside newly established landscaped beds. There is nothing you can do to prevent cinch bug from camping on your lawn except to be alert for the tell-tale signs and begin treatment early. 3. Watch your lawn very carefully for spots that appear to be "thinning", perhaps turning a bit brown. Chinch bug can easily be identified on hands and knees at high noon on a sunny day when they are most active and visible. Run a hand over the suspect lawn area, parting the grass and if the problem is chinch bug you should see zillions of very tiny, shiny black bugs running around. There is no mistaking them. On-line searching should be very helpful for identifying and treating chinch bug organically.

Control method for peppervine in St. Augustine lawn?

Peppervine, "Ampelopsis arborea" is considered an invasive plant species even by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, but there is little that I can find about methods of control. It apparently prefers a good, healthy soil that is evenly moist, just what most turf grasses also prefer. I'm not the yard doc, but anyway.... First, check to see if you actually have cinch bugs. The quickest way is to make an artificial mini-flood to force them to the surface. Just take a big bucket of soapy water and dump it all on the questionable spot. Toss a towel over the mess and wait a minute or so. If you have an infestation, you'll see tons of bugs on the towel and at the surface. If the infected area isn't that large, the quickest organic way to control them is to grab a shopvac and suck them up off the towel and leaf blades. You don't have to kill every bug to get an infestation under contol, just knock back the population to levels where it isn't causing much damage. FYI - they are experimenting with a fungus that seems to attack cinch bugs, but I don't think it is commercially available (or proven effective) yet.

John, if you're willing to spend a little upfront, Celsius WG will probably do what you want. Others have mentioned bonide sedge ender. In both cases there are some restrictions for st Augustine grass. I just switched to st. Augustine grass recently and now I use Celsius after help on forums. Google those products on this and other forums, or PM me and I could give you links.

Had chinch bugs which destroyed alot of lawn. Used "Bayer" but still think I have bug issues although I'm not sure with what. Want to put something down now to prevent any other crtitters from attacking my lawn.

I get chinch bugs but they never seem to damage my st augustine lawn. i think it has more to do with proper maintenance such as mowing high (3-4 inches) and watering very deeply but not very often (every 2 weeks during summer). I also practice organic so I don't use synthetic pesticide which allows for natural predators to come (toads, lady bugs, wasps, etc) to keep pests under control.

The chemical companies thrive on people who want to prevent future infestations of [fill in your favorite pest here]. You will always see advertising trying to sell you products you probably don't need. Lou is suggesting the approach of letting nature do the work for you. If you stop using poisons, the natural predators will do what you cannot do (out fox the insects).

Unfortunately the natural way will not work at this time for me. My neighborhood as a whole is suffering from much of the same problem. It is believed it was caused by lawn services who went from home to home never washing out their equipment in between. Got rid of my service, got myself a John Deere and now want to get things so that I can control my lawns destiny. Need to kill off what I have first before the whole lawn is effected and eaten away. Then I would love to go organic.
