Yard Crawl goodies

Last weekend DH and I went to a 50 mile long yard sale that is held every year in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. We had a blast and brought home a few treasures too.

I found this handmade spool bed which we realized later was a cradle missing it's rockers for TWO DOLLARS!! I nearly fainted when I asked the lady if the price tag was correct and she said yes! LOVE IT!

We found some old metal wheels as well.

Sounds like you had an awesome time! You sure found some wonderful stuff. Love the old lantern and spool crib. That big nut with the squirrel on it looks familiar. My aunt used to have one just like it. The red stained glass candle holder thing is cool too.

Thanks everyone:) The plan is to take off the arms and candleholder and leave the wings,it looks good on the peak of the greenhouse. I'd like to paint the wings lavender,the angel is already aged looking. The plate and saucer are cracked and chipped so they're going into mosaics,the dainty cup is going to go on another chandelier birdfeeder that turned out to be a squirrel feeder;those sweet little tea cups apparently are the same size as a squirrels behind. Seems they can sit in one cup and reach over to the next one and eat at leisure,they are however kind enough to dump plenty of seeds on the ground for the birds.

Thanks, weed! The soil seems to be clay here and there but mostly it's a shovel's depth down--just need to feed the microherd! When the weather dries out it's not very moisture retentive. Thanks for your reply, Ken! Can't find large amounts of compost nearby except the mushroom stuff. It has poultry litter and a few other ingredients in it. It happens that a friend was hauling from the seller and he'll be dropping me off another load tonight--10 more yds! I must be living right. This is something I've been wanting to do for years and years. I mentioned I'll be layering the components, not incorporating but thanks for the heads up. I read lots of places that it's the mixing in of the wood chips that robs nitrogen not the layering on top. Controversial, I know. DH has been turning the (hot) chip pile from time to time with his tractor--which he loves to do! It's cooking very well! I've admired pics of your garden! Prairie, sounds like you've got it under control! I have only a small raised veg plot at this time and it will get the treatment, too! I read about the DE on the Container Gardening and I think the Cactus Forums, It helps with porosity/drainage. Prepare to go on a journey if you research it! I believe I got both the corn gluten meal for a pre-emergent for weed seeds and the corn meal for feeding the soil critters in the lawn. It was long ago and I've been storing the bags in large plastic tubs--I'm almost afraid to open one! Hi Sunny! We initially amended when we established the borders about 20 years ago, too. Work got in the way and I now have time. Will you share regarding the seaweed compost? I remember reading about it here years ago on the Soil Forum. I live near the ocean and probably need to get some sort of license to harvest it--not sure about that, must look into it! Your gardens are lovely. Rouge you cwazy wabbit! LOL I got the pelleted alfalfa initially for my lawn at the local feed store--call around for the best price--and never used it. Some of the natural stuff can get whiffy if on top of the ground but apparently improves after rain. It's amazing what people put on their lawns and in their gardens! Livestock feed. Cheap dogfood, soybean meal, feather dust, cottonseed meal, Milorganite to name a few...it's a whole other world, I tell ya. You know I love your garden style! Check out the other garden forums--if you have the time, they're an amazing wealth of information. Woodstea, I hear ya on the synthetics. I just couldn't bring myself to use it so I've done nothing instead for years! Just saying that, for me, it wasn't in the cards. Four 40 pound bags of alfalfa will be dispersed over a large area. Thanks for sharing everyone. Wish we could have a plant swap... After a good cleaning up/weeding fest and a few days of torrential rain, I'll broadcast the alfalfa by hand in the flower beds along with the DE, rock dust and worm castings (if I get some), then I'll put the mushroom compost on top of that with wood chips as icing, settle back wait for the monsoons and hope for the best! We get lots of rain here in the Pacific Northwet... Pitimpinai--I won't be cleaning up the garden till late September/early October, it's in the 80's today and I'm in the shade! I have a friend that starts chopping in August! Got lots of flower beds to attack--takes time! I'm a planner...I also have a smallish window before it rains for 6 months without stopping. Gotta be ready to strike when the notion moves me! I love my Colchicum! Your soil and amendments sound awesome! I want lots of fat worms, too! My composters are from the local Master Gardener's Program. I have three--they don't hold much though. I use kitchen scraps, straw and some clippings and put any finished product on my small veg plot.

That's just too cool, kiddo! I think that's a good idea about planting corn here and there as accent pieces. I might do that too, next year, maybe with some beans! I picked a yard long bean yesterday and it really WAS a yard long! So far it's the longest one I've picked, most have been only a little over a foot long, but still lots of bean for the space. It was hilarious, I was so excited about the bean that I took it to show my husband. He's just had knee surgery and the home health nurse was with him, changing his bandage. When I came in dangling the bean, the nurse jumped. She thought it was a snake! LOL we all had a good laugh, she was really glad to know it was only a bean. The people who walk the park along my back fence just love to stop and chat and ask questions about the garden. I have met so many people that way. Even the guys who run the mowers for the City will stop and take their breaks at our fence. I just love volunteers! It's like a little present from Mother Nature. LOL I always let them grow if I can. Last year, I had several cantaloupe from volunteer plants. I had never grown them before, the seeds were from a supermarket cantaloupe that I had put in the compost bin. This year, I had a couple of plants come up in the compost bin, they look like a cucumber or squash plant. I haven't bought a cantaloupe in awhile so not sure what they are. I transplanted them someplace where they will grow better and we'll see, eventually, what they are. I can't remember putting cukes or squash out there either, so it might even be something the birds planted. In that case, it could be most anything. If there was no such thing as stock panels, I wouldn't know what to do! DH made a grape arbor and a trellis out of pipe, and we put pieces of stock panels up the sides and on the tops of them to support the things that grow there. Besides my two stock panel arches, I also have put a hog panel along the side of one raised bed because the asparagus keeps flopping out into the walkway if I don't. Normally I would use tomato cages, but I used all I had on other things and can't seem to buy any more, everyone's sold out and not ordering any more for the season. Beans are hard to see, to get every one of them. Pretty often, there will be ones I miss and they will have gotten too big to eat. I just let them go ahead and "ripen" on the vine and I use those beans for seed. If you "stew" your plums, you can use lots of the under-ripe ones, especially if you're going to make jam out of them. If you're sure the plum has no worms in it, you can put it into the pot, pit and all, and take the pit out after it has stewed (use only enough water with the plums to keep from sticking, and stew on low heat). The presence of the under-ripe ones makes it jell better. Use 6 C. stewed plums, 5 C sugar, a pat of butter, cook to the jell point and you will have nice jam. --Ilene

i wish i could go to huge yard sales like that! that would be so much fun...course i would need someone to go with me....I've got to get a garden junk buddy. :)

What marvelous stuff. I used to have the pine cone canisters! Mine got rusty finally when I stored them in a move.

You have me DROOLING like a baby, I hope my keyboard survives! For starters, just the fun of GOING to something like that sounds fantastic. Then your goodie haul...so MUCH neat stuff! Right off, that big blue seashell vase caught my idea. (Holiday decor, LOL, for summer decorating of course.) The neat candle holder with the three red glass pieces. Those old wheels. WOW. The

Wow what a haul of great junk. It that a iron ladel I see next to the lantern? Looks like the one my grandfather had for scooping molten lead into forms for weights for his decoys. Those iron wheels are to die for. So hard to find. Also love all the birds and littel girls. Great topper for totems. The little guy holding the big fish.......lol.....my dad! Looks like you and DH have lots of goodies to work with.............Great fun!

Thanks everyone...we did have a great time! Nona...I have no idea what the feathery looking pieces were. There are four feathers and I paid $1 for all four. Chelcass..there are two iron ladels and I think DH plans to use one for a spider head. He's been looking for the right piece. And Marylee, I'm thinking that the wheels will go up on our new privacy fence when we get it built.

Wow you sure made a haul. The red candle holders with stand is very nice. I would put solar lights in the holders and put it on a patio or deck table.

No matter what the silver pieces are--I love the look!!
I have my Dad's iron ladles....
I picked up a white spool cradle 'curb shopping' one day.
I love those. It is full of other curb shopped items, because I can't make up my mind what to do with it.

OMGosh...do you know whenever I watch that show I have to immediately go CLEAN something! Amazingly, I "absorbed" everything into my stash. My DD did lose a few things in the earthquake we had today though.

Hope not much loss for DD.

Funny thing about Hoarders show, I think it makes all of us want to go clean or organize something. LOL. I'm such a Stuff Queen, but I like how that show makes me look like a "minimalist". LOL.

Wow and LOL! You got some great stuff. I never thought of myself as a hoarder, just a collector. Sold most of the stuff or gave it away to go fulltime RV. That lasted 6 months. Have our single wide stuffed now. Wish I could have a yard sale. We live in the middle of nothing now. Too far away for many people to come too. There's another yard sale that is a few states wide. I always wanted to go to that one.
