removing dead areas in lawn

What is the best way to remove large areas of dead lawn grass to prep for new turf? The largest area is about 200 sf and there are several smaller areas. Would a rototiller followed by raking up the mess be best?

Not at all. Never rototill in preparation for turf. Three years later you'll have the bumpiest lawn in the neighborhood. It never settles evenly.

Just hoe or scrape it off.

Why is the grass dead? If you don't fix the problem it will die again. Is shade an issue? Watering? Flooding?

You do not need to remove the base of the grass and expose bare soil for re-planting.If raking with a leaf rake will get the dead blades to stand, rake and then scalp the area with your mower. Take care that you don't ground the mower blade.
If that won't work, an alternative is to rent a power vertical rake or just do it manually as previously recommended.

Mounds make good reasons to add large rocks to the landscape, which will add some variety in natural materials and textures. Also they don't require maintenace. Before building the berms do a quick line-level survey of multiple axis acrosss your yard to determine drainage patters... you don't want a berm to become the Hoover Dam. Also the survey will allow you to know your yard and serve as a the basis for a drawing for planning the berms. Having a grading plan in hand before the dump trucks arrive is a good idea. Allow soil to naturally compact before planting anything major or add the compaction along by using foot-power.

How serious is a heat wave in Northern Ontario? What kind of grass did you plant? What was your watering schedule after the grass came up? There is nothing wrong with good compost. It certainly has no chemicals in it. In fact compost is used to normalize the effect of using chemicals. Did your compost smell fresh as a forest floor after a spring rain, or did it smell sour? Was it warm at all? I'm against the free addition of soil for most any reason other than to build up low spots for proper leveling. Mother Nature does not add more soil when She reseeds a prairie. No, your grass came in fine. Something else killed it. I'm thinking disease from too frequent apps of water.

The grass is going to grow like crazy in the early spring regardless of whether you fertilize. Professional grass farmers use their spring application of fertilizer to carry the grass from the time after that initial flush of growth into the summer. In other words they apply after the grass growth slows down. Hence the Memorial Day suggestion by tiemco. Seeding in the spring is not helping matters. You are probably going to water much more frequently to get that seed to sprout. If you would get all your 'densifying' done in the fall, you would be in better shape in the spring. Is your lawn all fescue with no Kentucky bluegrass? KBG would not work much in the shade.

Adjusting soil pH will have little to no impact on the horsetails and eliminating them entirely will require a much greater effort. These plants have been around for over 300 million years and are circumpolar in distribution - they occur everywhere!! They are not fussy about soil conditions and will grow in moist as well as consistently dry soils, acidic to alkaline (their preference is neutral to slightly basic but they will grow in acidic soils as well) and from clay to sandy soils. Their silica content makes them difficult to control with most herbicides and control and eventual elimination requires considerable diligence on the part of the homeowner. It is a process measured in years typically, not weeks.

Thanks both for the replies. The large dead area was inadvertently killed with Roundup when an unexpected wind shift came up as I was murdering some weeds along the edge of the lawn last year. I expect the Roundup is no longer viable now.

The rake-and-mow-short suggestion will not work here, also I think I would then have a ridge where the new turf ends and the existing lawn still shows.

Were I to rototill the area, of course it would need to be treated as a new installation, with grading, raking and rolling to establish smooth and flowing contours while maintaining drainage.

Maybe I'll go to my friendly local rental store to see what sort of weapons the can arm me with.
