Tecumseh HH70 replacement?

The application is an old Ariens tiller, the existing engine has about 3/16 of visible crankshaft play while running, and sounds like it might last another 15 minutes.

What "new" engine will fit with minimum complications? The reverse drive can be done without, but the crankshaft must be able to work with existing pulley and belts. It looks like a 1 inch shaft.

They don't build 'em like that anymore. You have the cast iron block. A Tecumseh dealer should be able to supply a replacement if still available with the spec number.

Since this is a cast iron engine, it may be in your interest to find someone who knows how to repair your existing engine.

You need to tension the spring prior to installing the rope. With rope removed, wind pully in same direction it turns when rope is pulling out. With starter assy removed and upside down this is counter clockwise. Wind the pully until spring stops you, then back off until hole in pully for rope aligns with hole in recoil housing. If this back off isn't at least one half turn, go another turn in your back off. Then slide a thin screw driver through pully spokes and housing air slits to hold pully in place. Slide rope in and tie a knot. You need 7 to 8 foot of #4 rope. About 5 foot for the pully and 2 to 3 foot to go up to the mowers handle for the extended rope mount, allowing for starting from operators position. In the end you want rope length to stop pull by being fully extended and not stopped by spring being wound tight. If fully would spring stops pull you will destroy the spring.

@saxman1 "The funny thing about 'jackssmallengines' is, every time I see it I think 'jackass'." You are much more observant than I, the thought never crossed my mind, however, there must be some validity to it with all the negative stories I read. Many said they charge your credit card before shipping although the site policy states otherwise. I suppose I was just lucky ordering common parts. Not being a gambling man, any future parts purchases will be made at other sites. Thanks for your correct diagnosis of the primer problem being the bulb itself. I have started it three days in a row now, all with three pumps of the primer each time, it started on the first pull each time. It is cold here and is being stored in a enclosed but unheated patio. I will return to my brother in-law in the spring since he will be storing it outdoors (covered). Breaks my heart to see OPE stored outdoors exposed to the elements.

Tie the bail wire to the handlebars, the one that applies the engine brake. Leave it tied there until the flywheel is back on and torqued down. Remove the flywheel and disconnect the spark plug wire. That's a picture of the breather. You DO NOT want to damage the breather itself. Prying it out of the engine can easily damage the breather. Use a screwdriver to pry the seal out of the engine and carefully separate the breather from the seal. You may want to cut it out surgically with a razor blade. I have only seen ONE of these seals leak and that was on a mower about 20 years old. If there is no oil leak, DO NOT remove the breather. They last for the lifetime of the motor.

I have a 7 year old OVRM120 that surges and I think is due to a worn throttle shaft. The surging occurs quite bit at low speed setting and some at the high speed setting. When the throttle shaft is sprayed with carb cleaner the surging stops. The governor was also cleaned with no improvement. The gas cap was loosened to check the vent and no improvement. The Tec manual shows the throttle shaft is replaceable. along with new throttle plate screws. Can this be done or do I need a new carb?

Wayne,

The HH, cast-iron were "DISCONTINUED" from use in 1994.
Ariens used an H60 with a cast-iron sleeve cylinder as
a replacement for the HH70 until 1997 when ALL H series
engines were "DISCONTINUED" due to EPA exhaust emissions
regulations. In recent years, an HM80 replacement was
substituted for the HH and H engine, part# 208120A. It
will come with the 1" PTO and extended camshaft PTO as
well for the reverse drive. If the extended camshaft is NOT
IMPORTANT to you....you could use just about ANY brand of
engine in an 8-10HP configuration with a 1" crankshaft.
One thing to note, however.....The larger HP engine has a
wider mounting stance than the HH70 and will require MOVING
the engine forward approx 2" and drilling NEW MOUNT HOLES
in order for the belts, idlers, and pulley to align properly. It's not a hard replacement.

Thanks for the responses. While I have the needed mechanical aptitude to rebuild the 1990 vintage engine, time is at a premium right now. If I can find a used engine for this season that would be great, then I'll probably rebuild the HH70 over the winter.
