Beer Bottle Cap/Crown Bowling Ball

I first saw bowling ball art a few years ago and I was fascinated. I made a few and was thrilled with the way they came out.

This is my newest creation. Since my husbnad drinks beer and is a beer can collector it was the obviuos one to make. I found this great spider planted and gave him bottle cap eyes (Magic Hat Beer).

In the late forties the way we dealt with GA heat and no AC was to open the windows only a few inches and turn on attic fan from sunset to midmorning. The partially opened windows created the strongest draft and the curtains would just billow out. Then windows and blinds were closed and drapes drawn during hottest part of day. It was such a relief to finally get window ac units about 1950. I remember those Playtex girdles though I never wore one...my friends and I preferred the nylon when we wore stockings but don't think they were much "cooler"...in both senses of that word...LOL In college in the early fifties we wore socks and flat shoes and no girdles. Stockings and girdles and high heels were for dress up. Of course when we went to work after college in the mid-fifties it was girdles and stockings and high heels every day. I can't remember exactly when that changed...maybe when the bra-burning days came along? I was a SAHM by that time but sure welcomed the dose of fresh air and good sense! Anyone remember the Merry Widow bra worn with cocktail and formal dresses? Strapless but it came down to waist level and was so sexy looking even girls who didn't need a waist cincher had to have one...LOL josh

What an important reminder! And hopefully finding this in a search will quickly answer that perennial question of whether we mean the screw-cap when we talk about putting the lid or top on a jug (we don't!) I, too, have used jugs saved with the caps on--yuck! Even worse were the ones fished out of the recycling center; they were never even rinsed. That was a desperate first WS winter! I think it was Seedmama who suggested having a candle burning nearby when you clean the stinky jugs, so the flame burns the nasty smell! Unless it was you, Trudi. I saved a bunch of caps to the milk and the 2-liters, and they have come in handy. Like mmqc mentioned, for transporting water. I've also used them as invisible feet indoors, to get some things up off a floor that gets damp. Using them as pot feet didn't occur to me, though!

Yes, I remember them well. I thought they were 7 oz when I was a teen. And yes, we almost always shared and got plenty. What I also remember is that being in glass bottles, and kept in that COLD water, the pop was very cold. I don't buy much pop anymore. The other day I found Sierra Mist Free w/splash of cranberry, so I got a 12-pk. The cans were so tiny looking. I was amazed to find out that the little, tiny cans were actually 12 oz!! See how my mind has been programmed into thinking I NEED bigger! (BTW, I split a can with Sis and it was plenty for each of us.) Shirley

I would probly fill the back of the cap,for uniformity and so they wouldnt dent and for better adhesion. for waterproofness of a substrate cement board or wedi. even with humidity you will eventually have warping etc, but it will last a few years Id guess if you used marine plywood or something of that nature sealed well and brought in, kept in a covered area. You could also use some sort of board and skim coat it with concrete, then you wouldnt have to worry from what Ive been told, but there would be the weight issue. Make sure whatever you use has no flex to it, it must be sturdy or your grout will pop off. I have a collection of colorful bottlecaps to use oneday. here is a pic of a very cool bottle cap mosaic. Love THAT spider! What a cute plant holder. I really thinks he looks awesome with the beer cap bowling ball. And great idea making bottle cap eyes! It really makes a difference. Very cute project!

Thanks for the great comments. I never realized that he looked sci-fi, but now that you've mentioned it, he does. This forum is a great inspiration. I love looking at the wonderful Garden Art that people create.

Great BCBB! I love how you didn't paint anything. When a project comes togehter so nicely like that and you don't have to paint it's always like a bonus! And the thing too is that it really looks like a Black Widow Spider.

It's amazing how many things we can use to decorate our BB's. Just make sure yours doesn't get spider webs all over it! Hehehehee

I love this so much. its got to be one of my all time favorite posts. where did you get thet spider planter? I would love to do one of these. I have tons of beer caps and bowling balls and I love spiders. LOVE IT. had to bring this back up for Halloween!!

Thanks for your great comments. I've had a lot of fun with this little guy. At the suggestion of daisydal I added it to my Halloween decorations.

As far as the planter/holder, I bought it at a yard sale. I was looking for something to hold it and when I saw this, I thought it would work. It's a plant stand. I have another ball that I did that I used a plant stand so I knew that the idea worked well.

If you make one, please share it. I'd love to see it.

Babcia: I made a stepping stone once and outlined it with caps but they rusted in one year. I didn't coat them with anything tho. Have you put a sealer on your bowling ball? Very nice, by the way! I love it!

I did coat it using a spray product that I bought at Michael's. I also used caulk instead of grout because I thought the grout would scratch the beer caps.

I intend to bring it into the garage for winter, but so far it's holding up very well.
