Push or Zero Turn? Borderline lawn?

Hey all,

I'm hoping I can get a little advice here. It's time for a new lawnmower and I cannot decide for the life of me what to do. I've narrowed it down to two push mowers (well, one - but debating model with/without key start) and a zero turn or two.

I really, really hate mowing my lawn, I get overheated very easily in general, and feel like I'm going to die every time I mow/weed. I've been using a regular push mower so either one of these options would help but, I'm really lookin' at that zero turn. This particular one because it's the cheapest I can find, and also because it could fit into my shed and into a truck, through gates, etc.

The push mower is from what I can tell and after days of research, the best for me as far as push goes. But it's so expensive, I'm halfway to the zero turn!

But, my yard is also tricky. The front is sloped and the back has obstacles. I can move some stuff, bins and planters, so that shouldn't be the problem. The slopes in the front yard are the concern mostly I think.

Any advice appreciated. Is a zero turn out of the question because of the slopes? Home Depot guys tell me ZTRs are bad with slopes. If so that makes this easy. My neighbor has no problem mowing it with his but he also does this professionally and his ZTR cost 15 grand - and is much bigger. On the same note, are the slopes to great for a self propelled push, and would I be then pushing a 100 lb mower and make matters worse?

Also, if you have any input on these mowers/brands, feel free.

Just my opinion, I don't own a tractor or zero turn. I used a Toro Super Recycler Personal Pace to cut my 1/2 acre. I have a few hills, handful of obstacles (trees, garden, shrubs). I did not find it bad to cut the lawn that way. However, a job of 60 hrs, college, some medical issues and such has me shopping for a tractor or zero turn as well.

My opinion of your photos (though its hard to tell size) is that if it were me, I'd go with the push mower. Though I also enjoy and don't hate cutting grass. Even with my time and medical issues, from the photos, I personally would not be looking for a tractor or zero turn. Maybe I'm speaking as a non-owner of one though.

Anyway, the models I've considered

John Deere LA115 pricey but versatile. I was very close to pulling the trigger. Was concerned that its too much machine for my need and therefore I was wasting money.

Ariens A20BH42 (Home Depot) I *think* made by Husqvarna. I was very close to pulling the trigger on it. If you do your homework there are internet coupons that at least for now can save you $100-$250 off of it plus a sweeper for example. HD was sold-out online for a while, otherwise I think I would have bought it.

Poulan Pro PB195H42LT like last years model, this years takes away a bit, pricey considering a couple of hundred bucks more gets the LA115. Found a great price on last years model, but it sold out before I could buy, else I would be driving it.

Poulan Pro PB22H46YT great deal on last years model available, but the 46 inch was too big for me. Hemmed and hawed on its oversize for me.

Poulan Pro PB2042YT sure seems like the extact same thing as the Ariens, making me think they are made by the same. They just released the new models on the web site, never saw this one, though I would have considered it.

Ariens Zoom 34 - a lot of comments suggest the 2008 model was much better - support on the deck, aluminum spindles, a few more HP, etc. I could not find an older model. One used one in my area, but it sold already. I bought this one. Time was may major issue, I know people that own it. Comments suggest its a quality machine that is well equipped to save time. In the end, I got it with a mulch kit for the price of the LA115. I feel its better suited for my yard, though the price to me was still difficult to swallow.

level ground less than 1/3 acre? Just get you a cheap push mower 22" from walmart or honda or toro self=propelled if you think you can't push it. Really No self propelled needed, can push that in probably less than half hour and it's good excerise. Self-propped just adds weight and more things to break not needed in your case with level ground. I wouldn't mow when the grass is wet usually early mornings in spring and fall dew. Mid to late mornings or late evenings in summer. Spring and fall Late morning and early afternoon. I would multch and not bag. If you bag you have to get rid of the grass clippings, if you just mow the exit shut may leave rows of grass depending on how often you mow. IF you multch you want to cut the grass maximum 1/3. SO this maybe once week or maybe twice in early summer when the grass really grows. Grass needs about 1" water once week. Along with push mower you will need sprinkler and hoses when it don't rain. You will also need to feed it, control weeds, and sometimes down the road insects...Start reading up now so you won't be in over your head. Not that hard millions of people do it with little or no knowledge. One last thing NO KIDS in the yard or immediate area while mowing. Beware mowing with the exit shut torwards the street or at someone, the mower can throw a rock or metal object at high rate of speed. Fast enough to break windows, dent cars and injury walkers. So if you don't multch using the exit shut 98% of the time the exit shut cover will direct the clipping downward and anything else coming out. It's away good idea to look over your yards for anything that's not grass, like papers, toys, trash, ect... if you mow over these it will make mess and may damage you blade. Notice I said blade? No need for two or more with such small yard. If you think your in over your head watch some Ytube video's on servicing, starting, using push mowers. Unless you get elect. You need to check the oil and gas before use and inspect for loose hardware. Mowers vibrate and can shake hardware, screws, nuts & bolts loose. Ok enough I think you get the picture?? more to it than just pulling the rope and walking off.

Well, this is late for this thread, but it is worth writing because I'm guessing there are folks out there looking at this mower as i was and looking for any recent reviews as I was when i bought. I bought my cadet i1050 two summers ago and boy what a mistake it was. I had a JD at my old house and sold it with the house when I moved out. Did a lot of reading and checking and bought this thing at a dealer here in Maine called FM Abbott. So, I'm not going to drag out the whole story because my head hurts when I think of all the crap I've been through, and i have to get up early to call the half assed service center because my mower is sitting in the middle of my driveway stalled. Long story short, she has been to the dealer no less than 8 times (at either their expense to pick up ($50) or the expense of my time, effort and aggravation to trailer it over there). A few were because "there was no problem at all" according to them even though they took it with them (if it started, it is doubtful they'd have taken it each time_ and eventually told me they'd taken a few pieces of plastic out of the gas tank that were causing trouble. The other times it was because of the drive system. I remember reading a review that said this mower "climbed hills like a scared cat". Ummm, well, maybe when it was new. I have a pretty modest incline in the back yard that I just have to get up a few times and I'd say over the 2+ years of mowing, I've had to bail out more often than not and go down rather than up. There was a while when I'd step on the gas and the thing would hesitate, think about it, one wheel would spin then eventually the other would catch up....that was another trip to the shop. And today, in the middle of mowing she stopped in the driveway...no nuthin. I wonder if I can find someone to buy this POS so i can go back and get another JD, p.s. also worth mentioning is the inferior job this thing does cutting long and/or damp grass compared to my deere. p.s.x2, the dealer is not good at all. very friendly in sales and on the phone, but i can't believe how many times i've had to go back and i get no sympathy whatsoever. p.s. x3. Oh boy! My head is going nuts making this decision! :) I had my neighbor bush hog again (tax refund check FINALLY coming this week..that's how I'm paying for this thing..yeah, yeah, I know, I need to tweak my exemptions so I get my money much earlier, the crazy thing is my federal we had to pay and state we got twice as much back...go figure)....luckily my neighbor did it in exchange for me letting him use my well water on his corn...I LOVE neighbors!! :) I did bake him a batch of cookies, though. I agree I could use a 3 point hitch tractor but I don't really want one. There's just too much, attachments, size, bulk, and they intimidate the heck out of me..their under carriage decks don't have any higher cutting than the Kubota zero turns..and I want to avoid getting a finishing deck for my front yard...I have vinyl fencing all around and don't want to maneuver those tractors..yes, ideally, I'd have both a tractor/ZRT..but I want a pool! Yes, the crazy lady coming out in me. We've worked hard to get to this point, have had two house payments for 10 months, UGH...hard to save for these things and when that house sells I want to jump into a pool not a bigger 3 point hitch tractor! :) Sure, one day, when I'm hauling 50 pound bags of fertilizer around I might regret it, but nah. So, here I go, check is in the mail from the state, it's burning a hole in my pocket and I'm going to go check out that scag and see if I can't talk the Kubota team down on price....that John Deere 727A...it's got 23 hp and they will put a hitch on it (not 3 point just a drop in which I could use on the rare occasion)...I'm not sure if that's the right model but I know it had 23hp and a 54 inch deck with 7 gauge steel welded deck..I'll need to make sure I'm comparing apples to apples. Y'all have given me great direction and suggestions..I'm going into this much more informed and able to choose a mower that will atleast give me 10 years..by then I may make that tractor purchase...I've got a friend down the road that has 150 acres and is selling it all..hoping I might score a little tractor off him! :) I'll post a pic of what I get next week! Don't know your situation but I just bought a 20HP Ariens from Home Depot, using the $250 "bath" cupon code, had to add a cart to the deal to get the coupon, but with free shipping to my door (cross country in 7-8 days) an almost free cart and the fact that the Sears and Ariens are all made by Husqvarna in the same factory, it seems like a good deal. A zero turn will get almost into corners but for the price of the yard tractor??? Down side is that Home Depot has very little customer support for this, upside the Agri-fab brand front tractor scoop from sears (and Husqvarna) bolted right up and from calling a Husqvarna dealer who measured the rims on the rear it seems Husqvarna wheel weights are a direct bolt on option. With free shipping, at under $1400 bucks, I just don't know. I used to be a Craftsman fan BUT the quality and customer service today stinks, mostly the customer service which we used to depend on, all thing being equal I would not buy from Sears again, I only bought the scoop as it was on sale and over $100 less than the local Husqvarna dealer wanted for it. $1000 more for zero turn (trust me you will still need to trim with a mower or string trimmer) or a std lawn tractor is all up to you.
