bikes and bird trees

I am a 4 month lurker here, and have been collecting glass for my first totem. I just returned to Alabama from a trip to Minnesota with my daughter. I noticed lots of cool garden art/junk on the trip- but two things really stood out- so I thought that I'd share them with you. The first was a neat old white farmhouse that had a huge (20 ft?)dead tree in the side yard. They had cut off most of the branches- just left some of the limbs- and painted it all a milky blue. From the limbs they had hung all sizes and shapes of bird feeders and houses- painted with bright reds, yellows, and greens. Very unique and eye-catching!!

The other cool thing was a fence made from vintage bicycles that were painted white and standing head to tail all the way around the front of a hayfield.

Of course I have no camera yet, so no pictures, but I hope the descriptions are interesting to ya'll.

What town in Alabama, if you don't mind sharing? I was born in Florence, way too long ago.
Oh how I wish you had a camera, tho your descriptions sure painted pretty pictures. That birdhouse tree must have been incredible! The bicycle fence too.

Have fun making your first (second, third, tenth, LOL) totem. You've seen how addicted to them we are here.

Hi Christin, I'm so excited to come across an old comment of yours that you have Red Bird In a Tree seeds available. I've been searching for this plant for a while to no avail. When I saw Burgess Seeds carries it I was so excited and placed an order for it but instead they had substitute me with another plant which I do not want. I LOVE my Red Birds in a Tree! The flowers are small, but profuse and prolific - and so cute. And now I definitely am experiencing the same hummingbird love for the plant :) This past week, I've noticed a hummingbird making repeated trips to it multiple times a day. I've been trying to catch a pic of it, and got a few this morning - it is really cool how very close it flew to me while I was standing only a couple of feet away from the plant. It even hovered a few seconds to look at me! At dusk last night, I was standing by the plant and saw what I thought was the hummingbird, and took a few shots. But when I looked at the photo, it actually was a hummingbird moth, lol.

Yeah it would. we cut down a dead small tree (we'd leave it up but with frequent hurricanes + in a an exposed spot near a glass window it wouldn't be a good snag). We left the pieces in a perennial bed and they are full of some sort of bugs, not termites though. I also like to use some trunks as little log benches when I find some in heaps by the road. I think they can look nice in landscaping, sort of like rocks.... which are much rarer in Florida LOL give things a 'Winnie the Pooh Hundred Acre Woods" vibe :)

Bird netting over trees

It will be hard to get netting over 15' trees unless you have a tall ladder or can stand in the bucket of a skidsteer and be hoisted that high. I only net my cherry trees. I try to keep them no higher than 12' to help make this easier. I build a temporary frame around each tree by driving in 4 wood stakes. Then I add thin riser stakes to the top of the heavier stakes. The riser stake has an empty milk jug on top and can be adjusted higher or lower depending on the height of the tree I am staking. The milk jug allows the netting to be pulled over it without catching and tearing. I staple the top part of the net to these temporary stakes. The bottom of the netting drapes to the ground so I just put a stake horizontally over it to hold it down so the critters don't get under it. See photos. I only do this on 2 cherry trees. It is a bit of work but it even allows me to pick from inside the netting! These are old shots of when I used to use the cheap netting I could pick up at the garden centers. I too have switched to the heavier green nets from American Netting. They are much easier to work with and do not snag as much on the trees/fruit as the thinner/cheaper stuff. Well worth the extra money spent!

Glad you came out of lurkdom and are joining in our fun! I have yet to make a totem myself, but my dining room table is getting very full, so maybe we'll make them at the same time! Can't wait to see what you come up with! And thanks for the info on the birdhouse tree, and the bike fence! They sound like they would have been something to see!

kathyjb: yes do, add a bike or two along with your gorgeous window fence. I'm trying to talk my DH into making a window wall, using different sizes on the side of the hot tub that faces the neighbors. I know they're getting tired of seeing this old, fat lady crawl out of the tub!

Welcome to the group, daffodillady! I can't wait for you to get a camera. lol! I love my cell phone with the camera on it so I can take pictures anywhere. I know this isn't the bicycle fence you saw (this one is in Helsinki, Finland) but I thought it was still cool.

Luna-I love your pic of the bike fence- I love bright colors. The one I seen did not have the top rail around it, but that would keep it steady.
Daisy- Indianna Hwy 231- a very pretty stretch of road!!
Chevy-according to my DH,it's pretty small- but he'd love for you to look for it-teeheehee!!

I live in the Florida panhandle, but know Indiana 231, because we (I, now) have a cabin in Indiana, and we have been going there since 1986. I have seen a lot of interesting things when there. I miss going, because at my (advanced) age, I don't like to drive there by myself! LOL
I will have to look up your town and see how far away from me you are.
