HAVE: Scrophularia macrantha- Red Birds in a Tree

Hummingbirds can not get enough of this plant! Seriously, in my garden this year they passed up most other flowers for this Scrophularia when it was in bloom.

A native of New Mexico, but quite hardy (to z5 I think). It is somewhat of a challenge to grow though. It needs super good draining soil (especially locations where winters and springs are wet). Likes droughty conditions and doesn't do well with over watering. Flops a bit for me. Not sure, but it could be because it is more partial to lean soils.

*I CONSIDER THESE SPECIAL SEEDS. I am only interested in trading for other unusual things. I am not doing sasbes.

A side note- the seeds were a bit difficult to get out of their pod without the whole thing crumbling. I got out as much chaff as I could, but there will still likely be a fair amount. Just wanted to let you know beforehand! I have collected quite a bit of seed though, so will send a good amount!

You can always try hanging the feeders independent of the trees. A post set into the ground with hooks for the feeders or the shepherd's crooks they sell specifically for this purpose would prevent any damage hanging feeding appliances directly to a tree might incur. As to the pros and cons of feeding birds.......I agree with Dan on this one. Expanding development has restricted/removed many of the natural habitats and food sources and encouraging birds to the garden is overall a very good thing - they are the best natural insect control available! Plus, they are infinitely entertaining. Planting to encourage habitat and to supplement food sources is desirable, but nothing wrong with feeders either. They can bring the birds up close and personal :-)) If you want songbirds, try a "no-waste" mix. Even if it gets scattered on the ground, it gets eaten too fast to hang around to attract rodents. And sapsucker damage to trees is generally more cosmetic than particularly harmful. Since they have a 'preferred' tree menu, you can always avoid attracting them by not planting the trees they like. And as they tend to limit their diet to insects and tree sap, with supplementation from fruits and berries - the seed feeders are unlikely to create additional problems.

What a great family activity - I hope you are able to continue your checklist. Since you are in Central Tx, you may have seen a Golden-fronted woodpecker. The males have the red spot you describe. Good find, if that is your bird. Perhaps others will have another possibility... Candy

Cmk, I would be interested in this and/or your salvia "twilight" or white thalictrum. I do not have a lot of seed varieties, but would be willing to try getting a little plant start off my African false hosta (from PDN) or disporum flavens in exchange.

I live in NE nebraska and my "Little Red Birds" did not come up this spring. I did collect some seed last fall, and now, wonder how I should start them? Any help is appreciated.

Bael, please turn on your Houzz email: up in the upper right corner, click on Your Houzz, then click on edit profile, next go to advanced settings and scroll way, way down to where it says "who can email me" and change it to "allow anyone to email me". Hope that helps.

Hi Christin,

I'm so excited to come across an old comment of yours that you have Red Bird In a Tree seeds available. I've been searching for this plant for a while to no avail. When I saw Burgess Seeds carries it I was so excited and placed an order for it but instead they had substitute me with another plant which I do not want. Previously, I've also bought seeds from Ebay but they failed to germinate. I hope that you still have the seeds available. I'd like to buy some from you or send you some stamps in a SASE for it.
