Using large tree trunks in landscaping to attract insects for birds

Someone dumped a few large tree trunk sections at a local municipal mulch station (Chicago IL area). Trunk parts are about 1.5 feet tall and 1.5 feet in diameter. I'm thinking as these decay, they will attract lots of insects and larvae for the birds to eat. There are already some woodpecker marks on them. Am I right or am I wacky? Thanks!
