Jellyman: besides me? Upon closer, more insightful examination, all of the wounds are on the upper limb surfaces. I like the bird explanation, they'd stand on the branch though I've certainly seen woodpeckers in all positions on a branch pecking away. I was originally thinking the lesser borer because they supposedly attack the scaffolds, not the trunk base which is what I have. Ace: I didn't this would be the time to try probing the worm out but it was a slow day.

I find them year round more or less. Early spring I find the best time to dig them out, they are big enough to be able to track down but most of the damage has not happened yet. This spring I microwaved tanglefoot to get it fluid and painted it directly on the lower 6" of my trunks, to the ground level. I haven't seen a borer since then. Note I dug out 20-30 of them by hand before this treatment. I also treated only 5-year and older trees, the younger ones I used tangle trap instead (less caustic). Scott

I believe a 2 spray program with a pyrethroid like once and done triazide is all that is needed. I just read about it but forget the exact timing, but you can look up Cornell's recs for Commercial Fruit Production on-line.

Rayrose, just wanted to say thank you for the advice, I think I may have dug out all the borers from my peach trees and added the Triazicide to the soil as well. Today I dug around the base a noticed there are new roots growing and I don't see anymore frass. I still see a bit of jelly like substance around some of the wounds, but I think that's probably a normal part of the healing process for a tree that went through damage. The new roots and no frass has me thinking I may have gotten rid of the borers, that and the trees look good and healthy. Thanks again Matthew
