Varnish, gum build-up in carb and possible carbon in engine. Use the STA-BIL OR SEAFOAM ALL THE TIME. Add it to your gas can when you fill it. Use mid-range or premium gas for awhile. Add Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas can too - 1 oz/gal. Also the oil - 2 oz. Do this and use it hard - it'll clean itself out. You probably should be using SAE 30 HD oil in it. It should be clearanced pretty well after 10 years.

Well, I just finished mowing the lawn!! As my old troubleshooting instructor used to say...it's always something simple. I got my neighbor to help start the engine by pull starting while he fiddled with the throttle valve. No luck. He said that he thought something must be dragging; holding the engine speed down thereby killing it before it could get started. We checked everything we could think of and finally spotted a spot being rubbed by the drive belt. It's a Sarlo and practically identical to the big wheel Yazoo's. Now the belt was just barely rubbing. I couldn't feel a difference at all while starting, but it was obviously just enough. The engine still isn't easy to start, but at least it can be done now with 8-10 pulls. This tells me that it's marginal at best. I'm tempted to put a minor bend in the governor rod which would in effect, strengthen the spring. This should make the engine run somewhat faster. Any thoughts? Anyway, thanks to all of you who helped out. I now know my mower a whole lot better than before. Bob

I have bought a few products lately (last was a laptop) that doesn't even have a printed manual, you have to go to their website. I bet we will see more and more of this in the future, where you have to purchase the printed manual separately. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with Toro's website, there is a lot of useful information there (same goes for John Deere and others).
