Tecumseh Snow King Starts then stalls out

I have a Noma snowblower with a Tecumseh 9hp HMSK100 motor that starts then dies out after 5 seconds. It ran fine all season - difficulty began during our last storm. The plug is new, gas is fresh. I tried playing with the adjustment screw beneath the bowl but the problem persists. Any ideas?

It is not likely that the ignition is causing your problem. I can't think of any part in the ignition that would work for 5 seconds, consistently, and then fail. More likely, there is something in the fuel system that restricts the flow of fuel. The partial restriction allows the carburetor float bowl to fill up when the engine is not operating, so you are able to start the engine without difficulty.

Loosen the gas cap and try it again. I've seen plugged gas cap vents do this.

Have an ATV mounted Agri-Fab snow blower with the Snow King and after spending days trying to find the air intake filter (could it possibly be at the choke butterfly valve in?) was relieved to learn here I wasn't going crazy and indeed it was. I used the blower just two weekends ago when we had light snow and it started fine. Then, after our weekend blizzard, when I needed it the most, no start. Good spark, new plug, etc. Will try tapping the bowl. Spark plug is not wet when removed. It has fresh gas, had used it and had SeaFoam in it. Have too big an area to use the walk behind snow blower. Did I mention this was new earlier this year? Not happy they didn't sell it with electric start. Is it possible to add this feature to this engine? Thanks

@andyma Looks like my connecting rod won't arrive until some time next week so it may be a while before I can begin to assemble. I am getting more and more frustrated with the lack of information from the manuals and doing searches on Google. I only have one shot of getting this right since there are no replacement engines or shortblocks for this Ariens ST7524 blower. Reviewing everything again I see another potential issue which is confusing. If you look at the manual(figure 33 in original post), it states the marks on the connecting rod must align and face out. Simple enough, but if you look at the oiler assembly in that drawing, the concave side of the oiler is facing up. Now picture in your mind, the flywheel rotation is clockwise, in that direction the oiler would NOT be scooping up the oil as the design indicates, but pushing it to the camshaft side, rather than upwards to the piston cylinder. I hope that someone with experience will reply to this post and hopefully provide an answer before I assemble. You probably have the manual, but if not below is a link that you can download the Tecumseh L Head service manual. Smilin: As Bay has recommended running the Ethanol based fuel out of the carb after addition of Stabil will be your best bet to reduce gumming of the fuel circuits within the Tec Carb . MMO or Lucas or any other premium fuel additive during the winter season will ensure further trouble free fuel delivery . Note: The occasional sputter during idle is the norm with this engine as you have identifed . One other thing is proper oil grade for your temps . If you have servere (colder temps) I would recommend multi grade oil not straight SAE30 . Hard starting and valve train wear can be increased due to lubicity decrease within higher vicosity oils in cold temps. Bay: Let me know when you hear further on the New Tec Engines Arrival :)

Zoulas : I agree with the E3 Plug accolades ! This new Plug Technology has been Debated on another Thread within the Forum , I believe in the Merits of it Design Spec's . I have just finished the R& R of my Newly acquired Lawnmower from last fall , and low and behold when I pulled the plug to inspect it , it was a E3 lol. The mower is approx 2 yrs old with a new generation B&S Engine . I have no idea if the Plug is OEM , but the mower has operated Great in my 2 acre former farm acreage (lots of mixed dense grass). I guess time will tell of its merits over previous plug design. As for the Tec. Engines I hear that they are engineered as a rather lean burning unit , which as you have indicated may result in the hunting (surging) when not under load. I await Cg or Tom to validate !

You have either water or crud (or both) in the carb bowl,you'll need to remove the carb bowl,and clean it ! If there is water in your fuel tank,the symptoms will show up again ....so flushing the fuel tank and line is advisable....also if you store your fuel in a STEEL gas can ,it may also have water in....It does not take much h2o to stop an engine from running ....Good Luck,Jim

If the carburetor has the tin bowl on it, held on by a bolt, try removing the bolt and the bowl, then clean the bowl, and check the bolt. Look for 2 tiny holes in the shank or threads of the bolt, to see if they might be clogged. run a wire tie wire thru both holes, then blow thru the open end, and put it back together. Allow the bowl to fill up with fuel, then try starting it the usual way. This is a common problem with Tecumseh carbs, especially the tin bowl models. Now, if your carb has the black plastic bowl on it, then i can't help you. Those types of carbs get the heave-ho, if i have the old type to put on the engine! Some college boy type must have invented them!

Once I found that I had a green wire grounding on the block from the key wire. I removed it it ran great. 6 good years in good working order. Then it started gasping and quiting under heavy loads. Then would run but for a few second. I changed the spark plug just in case, it was pretty old. But, I remember this old lawn mower that wouldn't run unless you loosened the gas cap. When tried to remover the gas cap it was frozen on. I had to really crank on it. It came off, ice fell off the threads and then I placed it on loosely. The 720 snowking ran like a charm even under stress. So. Keep the snow off from around the cap and make sure it is loose enough to allow plenty of air so as to not make a reverse vacume and stall the motor. Don't crank it down so tight.
