Certainty Effects on Poa trivialis

I sprayed Certainty on the triv on May 12. The photos show a big change.

The triv itself has browned out (which it wouldn't as we've had an inch of water this week and temperatures in the seventies) and died back. The remaining bluegrasses are beginning to dominate again as much as they can.

The older photos are also there, showing the change from raking and the initial problem. I also have garden photos there to show off at work.

Wow, you have that much poa trivialis?

That hopefully your bluegrass will spread so you don't need to overseed. Thanks for sharing--I've been dying to see your results.

I have never seen a weed go this fast this far in this short a period of time. We did have nine inches of rain in April and reasonable temperatures (fifties and sixties), so I guess that sure didn't help.

I survived 3,000 sq ft of it last year. You're describing Poa T perfectly - you only missed one characteristic: it likes to "lay down" as the season progresses. It doesn't need to be underground to spread - stolon cuttings will do just fine in the right conditions. The pictures definiely look like Triv.

Certainty is no longer labelled for cool season grasses. Compared with Velocity, it is inferior but both leave much to be desired on poa triv control. It may be worth it to try if you are at your wits end and need something to try before a nuclear option is entertained. I personally think early spring selective roundup is the best way. But for poa triv that is young and intermingled with the desirable grasses... no way you can selectively apply roundup. My current experiment is to hit it with Tenacity until it bleaches, then spray primo maxx and follow up with Tenacity. We'll see. I would also urge you to NOT irrigate in the heat of summer. Poa triv is the least heat tolerant of your CRF, PRG, KBG mix. Hopefully much will bow out. Also be on the look out for seeding. If you don't frequently mow or let it grow too long, it will seed and then you have not just stolon spread but a seedbank to contend with.

I use Certainty on my KBG to treat my POA problems. So far it has spot killed the POA in the treated areas. The POA has turned blond (dead). Im waiting to see if the KBG will fill in or will I have to re sod those areas.

yes...more simply put I was asking if you had a roll bar of sorts on your mower or if the grass naturally leans over. I did get my height down to around 1.5in before overseeding but the rest of the turf has really taken off from all the watering I've done. I'd rather wait as long as possible considering that I checked the new seedlings and although they are roughly 1-2in tall, they pull right up when I applied just a slight amount of "tug" to them. As for the rest of the lawn (the original sod was laid last spring), the blades are nearing 4in. I did purchase a reel mower which I've read helps reduce damage to seedlings but the reel mower did not come with a bag attachment and the longer I wait, the more thatch I could create with the clippings. The mower I bought also only adjusted to a max 2.25in. (the only one I could find was a "task force" reel mower and I actually plan on returning it once I'm done as I've heard these aren't the best long term) Just feels as though I'm in a catch 22 here. How do you post pics on this forum? I tried with my initial thread but typing out the image brackets b/w my url but it didn't work ( [img][/img] )

morpheuspa - that's encouraging to here your good results with Certainty.

I also have a poa Triv problem here in Mass, and I'm considering trying the Certainty...

I'm curious - I've read that one should apply Certainty in late fall. However - you seem to have applied it in the spring - any thoughts on that?

One more question: in your pics (the yard looks awesome, btw!) - you have a picture labeled as "Invader1", etc...

Have you identified this "invader"? I have something similar. Does it grow in a star formation? I have a blend of KBG, p. rye and creeping fescue - these patches of this grass stand out like sore thumbs. It seems like perhaps a warm-season grass - almost like a finer-bladed crab grass...

I had such a problem I would've used Roundup if Certainty weren't available. As it happens, I later decided to reseed with elite bluegrass, so I could've saved some cash and gone with the Roundup to begin with. You live, you learn.

It worked just fine--with no bluegrass burnout that I could see. I don't know if a fall app would've worked "better," although better in this case would have been a 100% kill instead of 99%. Somehow that doesn't concern me much.

Thanks! I just mulched the newest garden bed today (the last, I think--a third of the property is now gardens and there is no remaining lawn against the house at all).

The Invader1 and Invader2 images were what people identified as Poa trivialis. It was just very mature triv...

Even if it weren't triv (I'm pretty sure it was), the Certainty took it down.

So as I continue to research this - I've come across another herbicide called "Velocity". Anybody know of this as a control for poa Triv?

Also - I understand that Certainty does not seem to affect KBG - but what about creeping fescues and perennial rye? (have have KBG-fescue-rye mix).

Actually - I think I may have found an answer to my own question - in the supplemental label for Certainty itself (I missed it before).

It does say that Certainty can be used in blends of KBG, fine fescues, and rye; with KBG being the most resistant, and the fine fescues and rye being a bit more susceptible.

If I go this route I should just be careful.

My last step before ordering some Certainty (which should have been my first step) - is to 100% confirm I'm dealing with poa trivialis. (although I'm 99% sure considering it grows in somewhat of a mat, it's lighter green than surrounding desirable grasses, it gets tired in drought conditions, etc...

I may send a sample to my local extension just to be sure...
