Sears lawnmover engine blew up, need replacement

I have a Sears Eager-1 lawnmover purchased in '84. The engine blew up, so I need a replacement engine. I like the older mower better than the current offerings from Sears, it has a solid grass-catcher unit. Seems to be alot more sturdy than the soft bag units.

I need a recommendation on a replacement engine. Which brand, & where do I get it repaired. I can do work on my car, is this something I can do myself?

Or, is it just better to chuck the old mower (can I sell it to a shop for parts?) & get a new mower? I have a Home Depot card, so I can spring for one of their offerrings.

Your old mower lasted 22 years and you want the Home Despot model to last maybe 3 ???

Look for the model number. It starts with 143.

Translate that to the Tecumseh model and look on ebay or better yet, look in Tulsa engine warehouse.

I doubt a shop would want a 22 year old parts mower that didn't run.

Most likely your engine was built by Tecumseh. If it was, it'll have an engine # 143.xxxxx.
Post the engine # (and mower#?) and I can probably look up the equivalent TEC #. No guarantee it's available though.
Chances are good though that there are a lot of other used engines out there that would bolt on. Maybe even a Briggs.

The main things to check are the bolt pattern, shaft length & dia. & key type so that your blade adapter fits.
Some people even re-drill the deck to take a different mounting patter. I don't think I'd do that unless a bit hard up. Old mower deck with extra holes is going to be weakened somewhat. A lot would depend on the deck condition. If the wheels were about to fall off, cracks etc. Your call.

'however the head, top of the piston, the top of the block and the valves are all fairly heavily coated with carbon - worse than I would imagine even for a 10 yr old machine (although I wouldn't consider myself any kind of any expert!).' Possibly from using stale gas. I tangled with one of these recently and didn't clean anything - just put in an E3 plug and fresh oil and gas (my 4-cycle 'mix' containing MMO+Sta-bil). The thing started right up and runs like a new one. Get this - the guy had put back 25 gallons of gas in 1999 for Y2K, and was trying to use it up in the mower in 2005! He passed away and I had nothing to do with it, honest! I expect continued use of fresh fuel with my mix by his comely widow will eventually clean it up, but I have to go over there and check on it FREQUENTLY. By all means do not scrape anything in the engine. Be very careful removing the old gasket remains. You'll probably have some more surprises when it does start, like a gummed-up carb or worn rings, but you might get lucky, too. Change the oil and use SAE 30HD in it - Castrol, Quaker State, etc.

Hi all, finally figured out how to include a photo of the light Ive been talking about... Prepare to be disappointed in my handy work... The foam junk around the light protects the unit when it should fall off the tractor and being kicked around while we are loading trailers and such in the evening hours... Ugly yes - but works great. The light switch is mounted under the seat (keeping it well away from the rain and snow) and can be switched on while driving the unit. Note the 1-7/8 ball hitch drilled and mounted to the rear of the tractor. funny but that little 10 hp tec engin really seems to do everything we ask of it - and mostly at idle... If we run into trouble, its generally the rear tires breaking loose on the grass when were moving something rather heavy. (BTW - this is the same unit that has reverse gear problems - from a different post) This unit sits outside - no shed or car port... Naturally with the motor exposed - Ive had a *LOT* of problems with getting water into the motor when it rains (going into and down the carb).. I typically have to pull the plug and crank it to blow it out. The wooden tool tray over the motor also keeps the rain and snow off the top of the motor - and that milk jug plastic piece on the back keeps rain and snow from blowing into the air filter area (and also helps to keep the motor warmer longer during cold weather). I don't think either of the Harbor Freight engines will work. Those engines are for walk behind mowers, and will have light flywheels and zone-start control. Also, your mower should be similar to a 25066 which has four bolt mounting pattern (like larger engines) and requires 1" x 3 5/32 shaft. New engines are no longer available as they don't meet emissions. You might find some old stock such as 6-8hp Tecumseh or 8-10.5hp Briggs, but not real likely. Small Engine Warehouse does have a short block for $135, but you'll have to put all of your accessories on it. Trickiest part will be setting up the under-flywheel magneto and possible the governor linkage. Supposedly have one left. Here is a link that might be useful: Tecumseh short block

Congratulations on the new X300. As closely as I can tell,you can get a bad machine from any brand...lawn tractor,car or ice cream maker. ANY manufactured product,whether man or machine assembled,could die out of the box,or run flawlessly for years. I,too,took delivery of an X300 this morning. I studied and conversed for weeks,trying to decide what to do. My decision was made because the JD sales guy was super,and I got one year same as cash from JD. ONLY time will tell if it was a good buy. On my street,there are 5 JD's,2 Craftsman,1 Cadet,1 Husky:ALL are working well. Please don't take this green vs orange vs red too seriously. For goodness sake,it's a lawnmower. Take care of it and it should be fine. Thanks to all of you,most of your posts were helpful,and I appreciate your thoughts.

The tecumseh engine on Craftsman mowers were often equipped with a threaded crankshaft and a large nut that held the blade and blade adapter in place. This should be considered when seeking a replacement engine.

Yes, there is a threaded crankshaft where the blade is held on with a nut.

I hit a tree-trunk with the blade, which caused a severe vibration. This is what caused the motor to blow up. No telling how long the engine would have lasted. However, I have a small yard (which is never watered) & barely used the mower over 20 yrs. 6 times a year?

engine # 143.344052 corresponds to Tecumseh # ECV100-145221F, can't find it on Tulsaenginewarehouse.com though.

I have a mig-welder (to fix any cracks) & drill press, so I can bolt in a new engine if needed.

I have a new Tec.engine I will sell for $50.00 plus shipping.Has a sears sticker on it but only a 4.5 HP.Let me know if your interested.Also have a new 3.5 and 3.8.

Another option is to check the repair shops for a used engine that fits. With all the cheap mowers made in the last few years, deck failure isn't that uncommon. They may have a good engine off a toasted deck. Many of the mechanics would probably know if they had one off the top of their head.

I don't know what kind of mower you have, but if 22 years isn't enough, it must be LOVE.

I like the Honda equipped mower at Walmart, it is a push mower, but it has all the other stuff (side, rear, muclch), and with a Honda engine, all for $208, about the price of a good engine.

The main thing to consider when replacing a 3, 3,5-or larger lawn mower engine is this: 1. The end of crankshaft where blade adapter bolts on.
1. Which way the starter pull rope outlet points! You may have to change it.
2. The bolt holes in the deck should fit another engine, if you point the spark plug the same way. But, i have had to redrill a hole now and then.
3. Also, the safety shut-off / blade brake cable,
  might have to be re-routed.
4. Also a re-route of the throttle cable might be necessary.
