Bed Flower Bench

It's been a while since I've posted on here & last year I had found this queen size bed at a garage sale for $2. I finally got DH to make it into a flower pot bench, since he's been laid off for 3 weeks now. I also had DH put some spindles that my dad gave me & ripped down the center as a little added something. The bed was originally a dark walnut stain, but we've been going with this barn red look for other items we have, so I like how it sorta pops against our dark colored house in the woods. Also, instead of using it as a bench to sit on, I decided to make it so I could set potted flowers in it.

P.S. I'd be THRILLED if it was put in the GJ Inspiration Album, if you wanted to have it in there.

Your bench is beautiful and I love the color. I cant speak for the GJ album, but I have already added you to my personal saves. I really like it a lot.

Some Random Thoughts 1. I am no expert, but as I understand design, a symetrically balanced formal garden is among the most difficult to pull off. Upkeep and maintenance become more critical because flaws are excentuated by the effort to achieve a pattern. Here's a quote from a very brief on-line article that points out some potential problems Â "A view demonstrates balance if the objects in it are sited so that their visual weight is evenly distributed. Formal designs often display symmetrical balance, with the left and right sides of the view being quite identical Â "The Courts is one of Wiltshire's best-kept garden secrets, known to visitors for its water features with surrounding topiary and its imaginative use of color and texture. The formal water garden is a favorite area of The Courts Â Symmetrical balance dominates this view: the water garden shape is rectangular, the Siberian irises on either side anchor the view, and the pair of simple containers on formal stone pedestals in the foreground complete the symmetry. The less-formal tree borders beyond the topiary and the less-formal arrangement of water lilies keep this garden from feeling stiff. The formal water garden actually helps the viewer make sense of the space, lending a feeling of calm and serenity. "There is one word of caution if you plan to use symmetrical balance to draw attention to part of a landscape. Maintenance is critical. A formally clipped hedge, for example, can become an eyesore if a section of it dies." 2. Some comments in your original post have me wondering about this issue of maintenance. Hi CG, I've made a few of these and found that you have to make them up as you go along. Sanding is easier if it's done before assembling it. Start with the headboard and cut a seat that's the same width. We put a frame under the seat made from 2x4s to prevent sagging. Attach some kind of trim around it to hide the 2x4s. We use glue, corner brackets and screws to hold everything together, since we're not carpenters. If you try to attach the seat to the headboard and there's not a flat spot to attach it to, sometimes the headboard legs can be cut shorter to place the flat spot in the right area. Some here use the footboard as a front or side arms, which gives it front legs. One time, we didn't have the front legs on a chunky one, so we took a 4x4 that was laying around and sanded chunks out of it till it resembled the headboard legs. Get the seat height and depth by measuring your kitchen chairs. We made some to sell for kids by just making them short. If you want to put it outside, remember that headboards are interior items and not made for outside, where the glues and original finishes on them might fail in a short time. It's a good idea to put screws in any joints and repaint with a couple of coats of exterior primer and paint products. Exterior painter's caulking is good for patching and closing up small holes where water could enter. It's best to not put pressed board products outside, but the car undercoating you get at the auto parts store may protect that and you can paint right over it. Also, prop it up on bricks or something or attach something like a small piece of a car tire under the legs so it won't sit in water and rot from the bottom. Hope that helps. What kind of weed is growing there? If they are sprouts, it sounds like the plants are being left in place to drop new seeds every year. If you pull the weeds one year before they drop another batch of seeds, you should see exponentially fewer sprouts the following year. Bark mulch is not very successful for weed suppression. Finely shredded wood works much better for that. It is still necessary to pull whatever unwanted sprouts show up though, with any kind of mulch. There is no kind of mulch that can completely prevent unwanted plants/sprouts. If your weeds are perennials, they won't go away until pulled, dug, or smothered.

You'll need to remove the mulch in order to direct sow seeds (annual or perennial) or the mulch will prevent germination or growth and you'll need to keep the mulch off until stuff is big enough. I had to do this last year...such a pain and things were looking patchy for a while. You can also sow one type of seed in an area so you'll know what they are but keep in mind rain will wash things to other places and then transplant elsewhere...which is pretty easy to do and the little plants bounce back really quick. I would not mix annuals and perennials just because perennials are really slow to grow and really won't look like much for year 1. Annuals grow like crazy and you can sow them in a tray (even now) and transplant out in a few weeks so you don't have to remove the mulch and they will get big by late june and flower for the rest of the summer. I like salvia victoria blue, cosmos, alyssum, california poppies, and bachelor buttons. Post a pic when you can, would love to see the result.

That is gorgeous. I'm sorry about hubby's lay off. He could always start making these and selling them while he waits to go back to work. I'd buy one.

What a lovely plant holder that turned out to be. I really like the spindle adornments on it too. I just saved the photo to put in our Inspiration Album tomorrow.

I absolutely love it - it's just my "color!" The split spindle gives it just the right amount of pizzaz too, it looks great. Send DH this way so he can make mine too (and I need shelves in the basement also, Haaaaa!) I also think your bench deserves to be placed in Purplemoon's Inspiration Album!!!!!!

PS - I had to smile when I first saw your flower bench, it being up on blocks to protect it. I do the same thing.

I *love* this! I've never seen a bed used in this manner - always as a bench to sit on. What a great job and a beautiful color!

Very nice plant bench, Love the color and it just pops where it is. Your DH did a lovely job. Don't forget to give him all the praise we send. For some reason it makes them much more amendable to doing more for us.

Its in our album, have added several more photos today to different sub albums. Everyone might have to just check often to see "what's new". Tho many do come off here, I spend most nights prowling the Internet (since I can't sleep due to the Fibro pain, its a great distraction) for more photos for us. I'm on a mission, LOL.

Bru, glad you jumped in. We're pulling out a lot of lurkers lately. How cool for us to get you guys to come out and play in the junk pile.
