Chickens and Ants! Can I kill one without killing the other?
Comments (7)One homemade remedy you might try: mix icing sugar half and half with baking soda. The sugar attracts the ants, the baking soda kills them. Apparently they cannot expel the gas it creates... Place the mixture in a narrow-ncked bottle (like a ketchup bottle or milk jug) on its side in the yard. Chickens should not be able to get the bait and I doubt it would harm them it they did. The ants will carry the bait back to the nest and it should wipe out the whole colony. If you do try this, please let me know how it works. It was some kid's science fair project and I have had good results using it... but would like to hear how it works for others....See MoreRed Ants Killing my Lawn
Comments (3)The heat from any boiling water you pour on those any hills will be dissipated by the soil before it gets down to the nest, that is just a large waste of your time, energy, and money. Ants nest where the soil is elatively dry and will move if the soil gets too wet for their liking, so simply put a hose where they are nesting and let the water run long enough to saturate the soil deep enough to affect them....See MoreMaybe I should just kill this flower bed-
Comments (8)Oh I'm making sure nothing I don't like goes to seed. Unfortunately most of these weeds are on our state's noxious list! Loosestrife in particular is on "no culture" lists, even the supposedly sterile hybrids and non-crossing relatives! Even worse is a lot of this junk requires killing of roots that don't pull-- loosestrife comes back from dried! On a good note, I have managed to kill most of whatever was invading my raspberries-even most of the bindweed! I live close to a river and near a gov't ag lab, so my beds are pretty visible to people who KNOW! My niece does a fair share of her own gardening (supposedly her dad's garden LOL!) She doesn't allow those things but pigweed and oxalis don't phase her all while I go nuts on them too! I'm less than a year in this house that was neglected, so I'm still finding what I have. It frustrated me to nurture a pretty plant in the middle of a barren spot in a bed and then find out I shouldn't keep it, much less encourage it! As for weedkillers, it hurts my neighbor's feeling but I go to the round-up! I used a broadleaf killer carefully to good effect in the berries, so I can combine them! Sorry about the vent, and I'll just go back to pulling! Thanks!...See MoreShould I just kill myself now?
Comments (47)Before you kill yourself, you can come over and put me out of my misery. I thought I had Lyme, but that test came back negative. Whatever I have, has made it almost impossible to walk for the last six weeks, so I haven't been out in the garden much. When I have been out, I've been shocked at how much has been eaten. I didn't mind a few nibbles now and then, but this is wholesale carnage in certain areas. This is after I almost ran over a very young fawn with the garden tractor this spring and made it run off, hopefully for good. (this is for the people who worry about mowing chipmunks) A fence is definitely in our future, but I really don't see how to only enclose the garden in a manner that doesn't look like a fortress. I'm also not sure I've really got enough room between my gardens and my neighbor's property....See Moretiemco
