Slit Seed or Aerate and broadcast seed??

I need help with my front lawn. Not looking for miracles. just want to do what I can to help it look better.

What would be the best way to renovate this area?

Should I:

- Mow the grass down short, slit seed and apply starter fertilzer. I can rent a slit seeder from my local rental place.

- Aerate, overseed with a spreader then apply starter fert. If I aerate, what do I do with the plugs? Just let them sit on the lawn?

Are you sure the dead looking areas between the clumps of grass is not just Kentucky bluegrass that has not come out of dormancy yet? Yes it looks funny now but did it look funny in October? I would resist the urge to do anything rash at this point.

It looks like you have some snow damage. I am in CT too and I have some myself, and it is slowly filling in as the soil warms, but I am pretty sure an overseed will be in order this fall. It has been an unseasonably cool spring so far, and regrowth has been slower than usual here on the coast, and even more so up north. I suspect you will see some filling in as temps rise, but when all is said and done I think there will be bare areas that will need to be reseeded. Whether or not you should reseed now is up to you, but it is getting a bit late in the season. If you seed at the end of the month, TTTF might make it through the summer (as long as it's not like last year), but there are no guarantees. I say reevaluate in one week to see if those brown areas have any more green in them.

If you can afford it, it might be worth it to go buy a cheap reel mower from Home Depot. The Scott's classic cuts as high as 3-inches-high and you don't have to worrry about suction from the blades sucking up your new grass. I purchased one a few years ago to use when I seed and I have to say it was really worth it. It is also a heck of a lot easier to use than the old reel mower my parents owned (that I had to use as a kid).

You can get away with using a drop or broadcast spreader at a very low setting--I borrowed one and can't remember what I used, but it was just barely open. Then I seeded once in each direction. Then, as I was noticing I was a bit trim on the seeding, did it a third time 45 degrees off from the first two. On 7,000 square feet, three seeding runs didn't take long at all. Milorganite mixing is fine, too, and use a higher rate. Whatever works for you will work for the lawn as long as you're getting down the number of pounds you need onto a properly-prepped seed bed.

I am not in a area as cold as yours, but I core aerate the 3rd week in August and I reseed at this time. I found it cheaper to buy a tow behind core aerator. I purchased it 20 years ago and it has paid for itself many times. Heck to rent one they wanted $60 for a 1/2 day. The split seeder is great if you need to totally do the grass over. Not sure of your area, but I have a lot of clay soil and aerating is a must.

Less effective than slit-seeding, a spreader will still do the job of overseeding. To be most effective, kill the grass with roundup, then scalp it with your lawn mower, rake up the dead grass and then spread your seed. Roll or stamp it in real good. It is important that each seed have good soil contact. Opinions vary, but I don't care for peet moss as a top dressing for lawns. In my opinion, a good compost is much better for your lawn and soil if you can get it. If you want to mulch, then you could use clean straw and leave it on the soil after the grass comes in. Many seeded lawns have grown well without mulch at all. Be sure to keep the seed bed moist until established.
