I remember the Picture you posted last year, and that tree was loaded, suprising it would drop down to nothing. My trees are younger. My Fuyu's that had 2 or 3 last year probably started out with 30 or so ths year. They have thinned themselves to probably a third of that which I understand is common wth young trees to drop. My Tampopan that have 2 fruit last year had none this year, but to drop from the number you had last year to nothing s odd. I assume the tree looks healthy.

I was wondering if your tree could keep up that production, but I'm surprised it didn't flower at all. Did you get good shoot growth at least? How did the Great Wall do?

A number of my kakis this year are showing poor production. Mature 20-25 foot trees that had been reliable producers have only a couple dozen fruit on the branches. I don't know the reason for this - perhaps something about the weather that the persimmons didn't like.

That said, one of the trees that has really dropped off this year is a Great Wall, which is known for biennial production. For this variety it is recommended to thin fruit very early, as this practice has been found to force the tree into annual production, and I did no thinning of last year's heavy crop. Maybe Hana Fuyu also shows some biennial production traits.

I also have less than usual persimmon production this year. Last year all varieties were loaded, this year just a few fruits per tree. They all flowered and started with big number of fruits but most of the fruits dropped (thinned).
I saw similar trend in other people gardens around here. Last year was exceptionally good and this year is really bad for persimmons here.

Alex, Great wall flowered and set a lot of fruit than all but one dropped.
We didn't have colder than usual winter and I noticed lots of dead twigs. It seems as though over production can weaken the tree as well as affect the production of next years crop.

I have noticed alternate bearing with oriental persimmon. If you thin the fruits after the natural drop you may not have this problem. I also believe some varieties are much more prone than others to bear alternately.

Is there someone please who can give me some good advice on my Fuyu persimmon? It has been in the ground just a year and a half. It stands almost 4ft. and four very thin 2ft. long shoots have grown from the bottom half of the tree. It has flowered this past Spring but the flowers fell off early on and it hasn't growned a centimeter since then. I'm using a 6-8-6 fruit tree fertilizer and a very thin layer of pine bark nuggets near but not touching the base to slow down water evaporation since here in South Florida the soil is sandy and water evaporates quickly.
Any suggestions?

it sounds like you have shoots coming up from the rootstock. Remove them since this will weaken the tree. If the tree is small fruit drop is possible. sometimes over fertilizing can cause the fruit to drop.

My Eureka is the only fruit I've never thinned. It self thins and has a generous crop every year. But I've noticed the fruit each year is mostly on different limbs. My crop this year is on limbs with little fruit last year. At least that is my observation.

Mine are starting to change color. Should have a few ripe in October. They ripen over a very long time frame. Can't wait to see what they do in my greenhouse with a 300 day season vs 180 days outside.

Persimmon Cultivation

Persimmons prefer well-drained soils and part to full sun. Our trees are grafted on American Persimmon D. virginiana. All are self-pollinating.

FRUIT DROP

Fruit drop seems to be a common problem for persimmons in the South. It is brought on by high nitrogen fertilizer or uneven watering patterns. Some varieties are more prone to fruit drop when young, but they grow out of it with age.

FERTILIZER

Use a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer on the young trees in February, May and July. This will likely cause fruit drop, but growth is more important at this stage in their development. On the third year, switch to a low nitrogen fertilizer like 5-10-15. Apply once in February.

It was really helpful as I already had some 5-10-15 fertilizer stored away to use one day. Now it will come in handy.
By the way, the persimmon's fruit taste is not like anything you can compare it to. It has a soft gelatinous consistancy. It looks like a beautiful orange tomato on the outside and it has a light sweet delicious taste inside when ripe.
They grow all over Italy and they make up one of the common fruit staples there during the late winter harvest.
