Fuyu persimmon pruning
Comments (10)Alabama: I'm sort of in the same position as you, having planted Fuyu, Hachiya, and Eureka in the early spring of '07. Mine came from Womack Nursery in DeLeon, TX, and I am pretty sure they are on American persimmon roostock, but wouldn't swear to that. I planted them among the other orchard trees, in what is, for me, pretty close spacing of about 12 feet to the next trees. I really don't know how large these things will become, or whether there will be significant differences among the varieties. So I am just going to let them grow unless they do something really outrageous. However, I am encouraged by an Asian persimmon tree I saw in the front yard of a home in Falls Church VA, not far south of me. That little tree, fully mature and loaded with nice big persimmons, was about 10 feet tall with equivalent spread. I talked to the owner, and he never pruned the tree, though he didn't know what variety it was. When I saw that demonstration, I knew I had to try this fruit, which I always thought was difficult to grow in my climate. During the first growing season, the trees put on nearly 3 feet of growth, and are beautiful with their shiny leaves even if they never do have persimmons. Comments (2)Yes looks ok to me too. Full sun is ok. Perhaps it should have been cut back when planted, sounds like it was a bare root tree put ino a pot; but I'd leave it alone now. Many of my persimmons have looked a little sickly the first year, they don't seem to like being moved....See MoreFUYU Persimmon 'stunted growth??' - pic included...
Comments (5)I purchased five gallon persimmon trees in January 2011 and those small buds you see in the leaf axes did produce flowers/fruit for me, most of them fell off but I was able to harvest about five mature persimmons the first year. My trees arrived in containers and are grown in containers so maybe that's why I got fruit the first year? My persimmons have fruit on them but I also see small buds as shown in your picture (as well as some swollen buds) and I'm thinking your buds are flower buds. Perhaps your issue is fertilizer...If you haven't fertilized up to this point maybe you should next spring but if you have been fertilizing maybe you encouraged vegetative growth instead of fruit production? It seems at least some of those buds should be swollen at this point. It is my understanding (and experience) that persimmon trees have alternate leaves and the buds in the leaf axes are flower buds not more leaves....See MorePersimmon Tree has lots of droppings on two leaves...help
Comments (1)The dropping are likely some kind of caterpillar. Look for something to squash or spray. The growth pattern you describe sounds normal for a persimmon, especially a young one. They grow first thing in spring and then often nothing else all summer. Lots of water and fertilizer is the only hope of lots of growth. Pushing lots of growth is OK for a young tree but probably not a bearing tree. You get better fruit on a medium vigor mature tree....See Morecousinfloyd
