I need a weedeater, and I'm very frustrated. I did do a search through old posts but didn't find anything helpful.

I need a weedeater for a woman, not a man. My needs are different. The main word to describe my would-be weedeater would be "simple." It needs to be VERY simple and basic for someone who made a "D" in a mechanical appititude test in high school.

I just killed my Grasshog Black and Decker electric model weedeater.--It died by being smashed to death on the pavement. I was SO ANGRY with it. I might have even stomped on it a few times. First, I couldn't wrap the line around the spool. Every time I'd get one line wrapped and began to wind the other line, the first one would come unwrapped even after securing it. I also couldn't tell from the weedeater instructions which direction the line was supposed to wrap. Next, I couldn't get the spool back onto the machine. It wouldn't go on no matter how hard I pushed, and it's not obvious which end of the spool to insert, nor are the instructions clear.--They are mainly pictures. Finally, when I was able to get the spool on and used it, the line kept wrapping around the head. I kept unwrapping it, and it would re-wrap and then I couldn't get the line out of the head. It did this 4 or 5 times.

I don't necessarily need a cordless weedeater. I don't necessarily need a gas weedeater. I just need one that is simple to use.

I have 3/4 acre, and I use the weedeater to weed around the garden beds and along the fence.

While I admit to killing my weedeater, I did not kill my husband. Wish he were here to help.

Maybe you need a cool headed teenager with the requisite mechanical aptitude to be on call for solving these dilemmas. Look for one who is working on his own lawn. Ask him/her if he/she wants to do the occasional 'tune up' on your weed eater. If he/she's okay with that, then go out and get the exact same weed eater that he/she's using so he/she doesn't have to retrain on new equipment.

I got the RedMax TR2301 for the same reason. I went for a higher end model, but when I felt how light and smooth the little 2 stroke was I bought it instead. It's been a fine performer, 2 pulls max to start every time for the past year... and my hands don't go numb anymore. The string is soooo easy to change!! You might even chuckle while doing it! Keep the other one around just to kick it every now and then! Only 'problem' I had was figuring out how to get the string to advance properly. I'm not sure if I figured out how to use it, or if it just loosened up a bit and started working on it's own. The button was getting stuck when I smashed it to the ground. I think it had some dirt in it or something, but it doesn't happen anymore.

My husband and I just got a plot in the community garden. We are gardening together, and noticed that we are the only couple doing so; all the other plots are tended by only one partner. I am excited about the garden, and the hopefully delicious veggies and TOMATOES we can grow, but my husband is EXTREMELY excited. He just loves it. So, we weren't too concerned about the expenses, because we are doing this for fun and for tasty veggies, and we have plenty of money to support the hobby. In fact, the garden is MUCH cheaper than any of my husband's other hobbies. And unlike his other hobbies, this one is close to home! We decided to follow the system in All-New Square Foot Gardening, with the upfront costs of raised beds, soil mix ingredients, and trellis and protective structures. If we manage to keep gardening for several years, these costs should of course be amortized over their lifetime. I think we've spent about $600 this year, mostly upfront costs of things that will last for years, provided we keep gardening! $140 - lumber, screws, weed cloth for raised beds $80 - electrical conduit/netting trellises $30 - tomato cages (concrete remesh bought on CL) $150 - peat moss, vermiculite, high-quality compost $80 - seeds; some packets will last us for years $80 - tomato & strawberry plants; strawberries will last years $40 - yearly plot fee So, about $600 this year. But subsequent years with this method, we will only be buying a few seed packets and 10 tomato plants, so we should be spending less than $100 in subsequent years. Our plot neighbor said, "You'll never buy lettuce again!" and as I contemplated the zillion little seeds in the $3.89 packet, I thought that just growing all our lettuce will save us some money. We are BIG salad eaters, so I buy a lot of organic hearts of Romaine and gourmet leaf and butterhead lettuces at Trader Joe's. In the summer, we buy pounds of the best-tasting tomatoes we can find, around $3/pound. So, good yields from lettuce and tomatoes will save us some money. Another factor in our financial favor is that here in Southern California, we can garden all year round. So, if we amortize the structural costs over their long lifetime and get decent yields from what we grow, we should save enough on our grocery bill for the garden to at least pay for itself, maybe more.

Hi Michiele, Landscaping around a pool that is in full sun, or at least in lots and lots of sun, can be very challenging. Often the heat that reflects from the pool and the pool deck are very hard on plants. When you are landscaping near a pool area, I think grass is always best because it can take the most abuse, from being walked on, having beach balls bounce through it, etc. To keep weeds to a minimum, put down a good quality woven landscape fabric, plant your grasses and add some mulch. When choosing a mulch, it is often better to use some sort of stone like river rock or lava rock because bark mulches tend to blow into the pool. Interplanting a taller ground cover like ornamental grass with a shorter ground cover can be difficult. Creeping ground covers like Asian Jasmine or Boston Ivy may tend to 'climb' up the clumps of grass. If you have a taller ornamental grass, then a shorter ground cover may get too shaded by the taller grasses and not fill in as well as you would like. You might try ice plant or creeping sedum. They also are creepers more than vining climbers so they would be easier to maintain. Both are very tough and can handle the reflected heat from the pool's concrete or stone surround. If you are going to have a taller form of ornamental grass, you could use ornamental blue fescue, fiber optic grass or blue-eyed grass as the shorter plant to fill in around the larger ones. It can be hard to combine ornamental grasses with shorter ground covers underneath them because the shorter plants can be overwhelmed by the larger grasses. A mixed planting of ornamental grasses, creeping groundcovers and dwarf shrubs can be used quite effectively if the plants are in scale with one another. You might go to the website for High Country Gardens (I think it is www.highcountrygardens.com) and look at their ground covers. They have a lot of uncommon plants that are suited to tough conditions. Good luck, Dawn

EG - I "fondly" remember the stove! Isn't that what started it all? Ok - so you are a redneck, right? That means armadillos 'n guns and other wild critters..yada yada. Are you still a redneck when you are sweet? Or shall we keep that a secret? I really need an education in how the rest of the country lives. Now I am not trying to be silly here but the notion of owning a gun and actually needing it on a daily basis is sooooo foreign to me. My dad used to hunt (in the fall hunting season) and shot trap and skeet (???) but that is the only time I have ever come into contact with a gun. Obviously recreational. I suddenly feel so ignorant about the ways of the world. Very sheltered in a princessy kind of way. Uggg....this has reminded me of a very unpleasant thing. When I was about 10 years old, my dad came home with the remains of a moose that he had shot and he had the liver in a green garbage bag. As he climbed the stairs to our 2nd floor walk-up the liver flipped out of the bag. Blood everywhere! Maybe that is what scarred me for life. To this day, I kill nothing. Not ants or bugs. If they show up in my house,, I escort them outside.

BWs are quite adaptable. Living in close proximity with them is a way of life for us. If I were you, I'd concentrate on a major clean up OUTSIDE of the house using rake, broom, weedeater, and a hose. Turn all of the patio furniture over, toss stacks of old pots, etc. The primary breeding area at our home is the attached garage. We now keep it rather spartan and clean it frequently. We dust the perimeters with diatomaceous earth and /or boric acid, both of which help a great deal. Inside, housekeeping is very important, too. Turn the furniture over and vacuum the "innards", move the fridge and any other appliance you can in order to vacuum and sprinkle the diatomaceous earth. I can't have any toxic chemicals around me, but I really don't think that the spraying is any more effective than actually making it impossible for them to set up housekeeping in the first place. Make sure that the seals are tight around all of the doors and windows, too. Don't rely on chemicals. I'm speaking totally from experience, by the way. BWs are extremely common around here and at one time they seemed to be everywhere, inside and out. Good luck.....they really aren't that difficult to get rid of. I wish I had a cool-headed teenager to help, but they are hard to find in my neck of the woods. There are two in my neighborhood: One is a 16 y/o girl who knows nothing about weedeaters, and the other is a maniac driver who has never maintained a yard in his life. If I do find one though, I'll hire him (or her) on the spot.

I'll check into the RedMax TR2301. There is a dealer for this machine not far from where I live. I've also been told the Echo GT200I is a good machine for people like myself. ;-)

The best place to get a TON of advice is over on the lawnmower forum. Just do a search on best string trimmer or post a new thread.

Those guys love to get in to the nitty gritty about such questions.

I believe I spotted 1 or 2 of your problems. 1 - you need to wrap both lines at the same time. I let the two lines trail from my hand as I wrap them, with a finger between the two. If you wrap one, then the other, the 2nd PINS the 1st under it and cannot unwind properly during usage. If you have the kind you tap to let more line unwind, tap it (gently my-lady) on pavement to get a solid bump. The lawn might not give a firm enough bump to let it unwind, PLUS you probably have one line trapped under the other, instead of along side it, when you wound new line on it in the 1st place. A trained Octopus helps. Mine has 2 notches to secure one cord in as I work the other through its opposite side feeder hole. [Or - Duct Tape - maybe?!?]

2- Yes, re-winding instructions drive me nuts too. The instructions are very probably drawn/written with the view being from the BOTTOM = as you turn it over to remove the "bump hub" so you can coil on new cord. There MAY be a re-wind direction ARROW imprinted into the plastic somewhere too. Look hard! Its color is probably the same as the spool or hub or whatever it is on. Make sure you are using the correct size cord. I go 1 size larger (lasts a bit longer), but that size works in mine. 2 sizes larger will not slide out the feeder holes in mine.

3- Electric hasn't as much power as gas, BUT it starts 'right now'. Whereas gas can be a bear, especially after a non-use season where it sets up and the 'lacquer' in the gas coats the tiny gas passages. It can be exhausting to start.
I suggest looking at electric only. No particular brand recommendation, but check the wattage (Volts times Amps = Watts and Watts = power) it requires as that tells how "tough" a job it might handle (14 watts will generate more power than 12 watts, etc.) and that also lets you know the size (gauge) extension cord you need to adequately power it without generating too much heat in the cord. Of course, the LONGER the cord the more heat (resistance) the large the gauge you'd need [10 is larger than 12 & 12 is larger than 14, etc.]. Have the sales outlet give you a short course in the tool they are selling you or go elsewhere.

In regard to the parts you find frustrating, you are not alone. Those can be annoyances for many trimmers.

Here are a couple of things you might try. I second the suggestion above about an elctric model. They often don't have as much power, but they are often lighter and easier for women to maneuver.

Second suggestion: Buy a popular model that big box stores sell a lot of and then just buy a replacement spool (they come pre-loaded with line) when you run out of line if finances are not really tight. Yes, it will cost a little more, but if you don't do a whole lot of trimming, you may reap the rewards in less aggravation with the line (both re-installing and using.)

Hi redthistle,

I have a Grasshog Black and Decker electric weedeater, and I love mine and have had it for about 6 years. I do not wind the string on it by hand. I just buy the refills that are on spools, and I just pop them in, when I need them. I used my Grasshog today on my front and backyard and the Grasshog did a really nice job.
