Bleeding Heart Vine...Christmas present??

I am slowly exhausting my search locally for a Houseplant

called "Bleeding Heart Vine". In checking searches realized that there is also one that is grown outside in warmer climates... not sure if it is the same thing.

My Mom mentioned the pretty Bleeding heart vine that she used to have and this gave me the idea to try to find one.

It rooted easily by taking a cutting and sticking it in water. Seemed to have a white bloom with red center maybe.

ANyone know where I could find one?? Patty

I can't think of a 'bleeding heart vine' that would used as an indoor plant. There is a 'string of hearts' vine (Ceropegia woodii) that is a favorite house plant, though. Could that be it? Ceropegia woodii also goes by 'Rosary Vine'. Its flowers are very insignificant, but it is very easy to root.

Any 'bleeding hearts' that I am familiar with are woody ornamentals and not suitable for indoor use. Maybe someone else has some ideas.

We have a "bleeding-heart vine" where I work that's at least semi-suitable for indoors, and more or less matches the description. (Try here to see if we're talking about the same thing.)

I haven't tried taking cuttings yet, so I don't know how easily it roots (one of our books at work says it's difficult, and best attempted only in spring), and this wouldn't be the best time to try to mail it, but if all else fails, send me an e-mail this spring, maybe.

I don't grow this, but found comments at Paghat's Gardens on it where she has described her experience in the Pacific northwest. She comments that given adequate moisture (but not kept soggy) it will keep its leaves all summer. In response to Ken, in my experience, Dicentra spectabilis goes dormant consistently, but the fern leafed varieties don't necessarily. They may slow blooming in hot weather, but here in my NH garden, Dicentra eximia blooms much of the gardening season and the foliage is present all summer. I also have an unknown white-flowered variety (maybe also D eximia) that keeps its leaves all summer but doesn't bloom quite as long. Goodmorning Everybody ! :) I heard from my swappers last night...:))) Mariann I have a couple of surprizes for you...We love putting surprizes in our boxes Regina started it.. Chell you are so creative and your writing is so much fun to read... I bet the boys loved playing pirate.. I can see their smiling faces now...What a great idea to make a hideout.. They will always remeber their hideout mom made for them... Clerodendron/Bleeding Heart Vine?

The Clerodendrum bleeding heart is Clerodendrum thomsoniae. It blooms heaviest during the summer months. It is a tropical vine that can take light frosts and will come back from the roots from a mild freeze, but I doubt it would survive outside in your area. They can be grown & flower in pots & brought inside over the winter. There are other bleeding heart vines in the genus Dicentra that are hardy in your zone.

fred1944? Hmmm, I wonder what that 44 stands for,,, pants size maybe? the 19 is his IQ, I'm sure of that, just can't figure out that other number. Well either way, its good to finally see him spelling on the level of a second grader. I thought same as Mr. Sub & was going to suggest it's Clerodendrun (from the flower description matching); which is a climbing plant.

The plant I know as Bleeding Heart is an outdoor shrub w/ pink blossoms which hang down in a row along a branch.

A local greenhouse can have one in April making it a Mother's Day gift but still hold out hope for a Christmas gift. A garden club is asking around to see if anyone one has one or has seen one for sale. Logee has one but that involves shipping from CT to WV or OH....still could be a problem. I am surprise to hear that they might be hard to root. Hers would get big and she would trims those vines back and always had a bunch rooted in water.....maybe it was her well water!!(or just the time of the year??>

Patty,

Gardino's Nursery has a 4" pot for $7.50 on their website, it says it also says they have a one gallon for $15. I have ordered from them before and if you go to the Hoya forum...there are lots of members there that have ordered from them and have nothing but great things to say about them. Their shipping may be a little more, but the plants are all very healthy and come very well packed. They are in SE Florida.

By the way they also have an 800 number and the lady that works there is very nice, you can also email her to make sure they have it in stock...it does show that its available though...Good luck!
