Asparagus fern
Comments (12)I'm lazy so I usually leave my plants in the mix they came in until they need to be moved up a pot size or sometimes if the mix is just horrible but I guess I've been lucky so far. I use Miracle Grow mixed with perlite. Alot of people here hate Miracle Grow, but I've had no problems with it AS LONG AS it's mixed with perlite or else it does pack down real hard and become a solid mass of dirt that's very VERY difficult to rewet. I have had my Asparagus plumosus since August last year and my Asparagus sprengeri since October last year. Both were originally bought in 4in and moved to 6in. The October fern was just potted up last night and holy moly are those roots thick! It was maybe a few weeks to a month from blasting it's way through the pot. The A. plumosus is the one I have alot of trouble with the watering frequency and shedding of 'needles'. How far is yours from the South window? Even with a cover it still may be too intense for it if it's too close. I don't have any plant loving friends but hopefully when I have kids at least one of them will pick up the hobby and if I have any plants still alive when I die, they'll be able to continue caring for them. Kinda like my mother and I, not that she's dead or anything, but it is her that I got my love of plants from. My brother couldn't care less. It's all about the video games for him....See MoreAsparagus fern climber?
Comments (9)Dave I have an entire fence covered with them lol. They do vine but in an unusual way Often getting 6 feet long before twining. Incredibly adaptive ,from full sun to full shade from potting soil to pure sand will even sprout on the sides of palm trees. Every pot I have has at least one. Have a ?? are they edible . Obviously closely related to cultivated Asparagus in fact in the same family. Except for size look identical . Have never been brave enough to eat them and can't find any info. I love asparagus while it would take a bushel for a serving would thin them out in a useful way?? gary...See MoreNeed help with rescued asparagus fern
Comments (14)Unfortunately it's quite hardy here. As long as the ground doesn't freeze, it won't die. Looks like it needs a MUCH bigger pot. The roots make tubers that store water, so it doesn't need to be kept moist but those roots need room to do their thing. Should grow prolifically in bright shade, no direct sun needed unless you're at very high latitude. (IDK about the kind Dave has, too turned off by digging up 50-60 volunteers of the other to want to find out. They can't be pulled, they just break off.)...See MoreAsparagus Fern turning yellow
Comments (2)First off Asparagus is not a fern, it is in the lily family. Second the yellowing is normal to an extent, just remove the yellow and the plant is good to go. You can move it outside for the summer it you want to get more light. A south or West facing window would be perfect for it. Also if given the proper care, you cannot over pot a plant. Root rot happens when the soil is too dense but if the soil is well draining, the pot size doesn't matter as much. Your soil looks like it has enough perlite in it....See Morejeannie7
