Sod Aeration ... any help appreciated

I need to aerate my sod ASAP before it gets any warmer outside. Unfortunately, I didn't have time over the winter.

The sod has been here approx 6 years. It's NEVER been aerated or power-raked. Take a look at the photos.

We have really nasty clay soil here. When it's wet and not compacted, it has the consistency of wet cement. And when compacted, drainage is very poor.

What should I do?

1. Rent a core aerator?

2. Rent a power rake?

3. Rent both?

Aside from a healthier lawn, I would love to reduce my summer watering costs if possible. Water is the new gasoline I'm afraid.

The guy at my local Armstrong nursery said if I use a core aerator, instead of leaving the cores on the lawn to fill the holes with a thin layer of topsoil raked into the lawn. That way, some of the clay soil is replaced. Do this several times (over a few years) and the clay soil problem will be significantly reduced. What do you think, good or bad idea?
