Hi Linda(?), Your drawing looks great but might be a little hard to get the right plants for. Most climbing plants would want to get a lot bigger than the low lattice would allow. Don't know the climate of Melbourne but are you coastal? If you have mild winters bougainvillea would provide a lot of color - year round in So. Calif. type climates but it would take up both trellis. So would australian Hardenbergia an evergreen vine with profuse purple flowers in late winter. As rhodium mentioned the potted plant could be hard to keep up. Pots dry up much faster than plants in the ground so you might need to plant something succulant that would be forgiving if you ever forgot to water it for a few days in the summer. A great australian native groundcover we have and love is myoporum parvifolium. It is evergreen trailing like you want, gently spreading but easy to contain, takes drought, heat, and a little frost and looks wonderful. Love those australian plants. Maria

This has turned more into a construction post than an organic post, but althea is correct, all posts will rot. You can take steps to slow the weathering and thus the rot and extend the life of the post. Locust, cedar or chestnut are good choices for posts if you can afford/find them. If you use concrete, finish it so that it slopes away from post to ensure runoff. Puddling were the wood and concrete meet is a sure way to accelerate rot. Cap the post with a piece of wood or metal flashing to eliminate moisture from penetrating the end grain of the post. If you feel ambitious, you can treat the wood every few years with lindseed oil or the like. This would be a lot of extra work for a rancher or farmer with a lot of fencing or corral to maintain but for a few kiwi or grape trellis posts, this should last longer than I will.

i have seen them hanging in guy wires on the utilities for decades .... waiting for rot is problematic ... as they most likely stay too dry.. to rot.. there must be dampness.. and something suspended in mid air... just wont have it ... is it within your ability to weave in new sections of fence ???? check out the link ken Here is a link that might be useful: it is surely a lot easier than this makes it sound.. lol ...

You can always do a glass fence. The first 18" to 2" are CMU block and then the remaining 47" are glass. Not sure what part of the country you are in. It may not be that available depending on where you live. Hope that helps.
