How many years would I lose planting a plum tree from seed

westover

I know the usual way to start a fruit tree is to buy from a nursery and dig a deep hole. But there is a wonderful old plum tree nearby, loaded with golden plums, and I would like to reproduce it. Am I correct in assuming that if I planted a dozen or so pits from that tree directly in the ground I should get at least one sprout next spring? And that it will reproduce true to form because an old plum tree 30 feet tall is not likely to be on grafted rootstock? If so, how many seasons of fruit-bearing will I lose compared to planting a young tree from a nursery? Are there other reasons why I should plant the young tree instead of these seeds?

Thanks in advance for your help.
