I planted Flavor Rich, Flavor Queen, and Flavor Grenade. I also planted Spring Satin plumcot. I don't like tart fruit, and have made some bad decisions in buying varieties that were advertised as being sweet, but weren't. I've learned to do a LOT of research, before I invest in a tree. Based on that, these were the varieties that met my criteria. The one that excites me the most is Flavor Rich. I had to buy it on Citation root stock, which is not drought tolerant, But I was able to run a water hose directly to that tree, so all I have to do is turn on the spigot, whenever there's a drought, like we have now. I plan to eventually graft it onto Santa Rosa, so I won't have to worry about that, plus I should get some really good yields from that variety.

Ravenh, you should contact Bob Purvis for suggestions in Z4. I wouldn't recommend Robada as I don't beleive it has been tested or endorsed as a cold hardy cot. You need to stick with the known hardy ones- and even they are tender trees likely to die at any time in yours or even my warmer climate. There's a good reason your local farm markets probably never even have apricots- they're tough to grow in the colder climates. I'm not even sure about Tomcot there. On this forum it has been people in warmer zones endorsing it. The ones from the Jersey program, including Early Blush are promising cold zone apricots but these have only been tested for zone 6-7 I believe. Another that might work is Hargrand or others from the Harrow breeding program.

Scott, You have posted photographs of your orchard, and the trees are planted in a tightly-packed hedgerow pattern. I think "W.S.R." needs space to develop the weeping habit -- longer limbs should start to droop/weep at the edge of the canopy in a larger plant. But it certainly doesn't "weep" in the same sense that (for example) a weeping willow does. It is possible that you got material from a budsport limb on my tree, but that does seem less likely. By the way, I'm not certain that "W.S.R." necessarily has any actual connection to "Santa Rosa" (e.g. seedling or budsport). My guess is that "Santa Rosa" is by far the most commonly planted plum in California, so the very-familiar name might have been attached to an unrelated clone. (I'm sure Todd K. would know the actual origin of the cultivar, if anyone cared to inquire.)

a potted tree with fruit..??? [since i cant presume you have a ball and burlap sitting there fruiting] ... and you are wondering why they were small ... probably because fruit producing trees shouldnt live in pots ... plant it in fall or winter.. whatever is appropriate for your zone ... do not trim it until late next season ... and then research fruit tree trimming ... rather that tree trimming ... little or no fert until next year.. since you really dont know what the seller juiced it with .... there is a fruit forum.. though i havent visited in a long time.. there used to be one guy over there.. that i have never seen here ... that was some kind of guru in fruit .. good luck ken
