Relax guy, no problem Mon. You got new sod laid late in the season, you are going to have weeds so get use to it. Personally I would not worry about the Poa, but if it irritates you spray everything green with Round Up. Just make sure the Bermuda is dormant. In the meantime relax until the end of February. Last week of February or first week of March Apply a product called AMAZE. It is a long half life Pre-Emergence herbicide. Water it in and relax for a few of weeks. Once you are certain all chances of frost have past, get the lawn mower out and scalp the lawn down. I do not mean down to dirt, but enough to get all the dormant brown grass blades cut. Rake up all the debris and relax again for a few weeks until the weather warms up. Once you see some green sprigs of Bermuda growing after it starts to warm up, apply your first fertilizer application using a balanced fertilizer. Go to your local Home Depot and buy some Lesco 20-5-10 or 15-5-10 to do the job. Apply at the proper rate of 5 pounds per 1000/ft2 and water it in. From that point on find the BERMUDA BIBLE and follow the directions and RELAX.

I'm with Bill, a broadleafed weed killer is what will kill weeds without harming natural grass. iF you understand the science of how plants take up water and air into their roots to feed a growing plant you can see that probably weeds given herbicide at this time will not be effective, it will just sit in the soil surrounding the roots. How long it can set waiting for the time it could be effective is another question. Roundup kills everything green, it has nothing against killing weeds and grass and anything else it makes contact with. You can re-plant within a couple weeks using the product though. AT this time if you can see a weed why not just pull it out. But if you dont get all of it, chances are it will just re-grow from the root you don't get. The more you think about what is depressing, the more likely it will get you down. I'm in agreement, winter blahs can be a downright beggar but think of something good about your garden and how it will come to life soon enough. The farmers are looking for more snow so it can put moisture in their fields. I wonder what the farmers around the east coast states are looking for; maybe a late spring so that all this snow-melt that will come from the feet of snow they have now can be absorbed gradually. Otherwise there's going to be an awful lot of flooding which can tear away topsoil and make it dangerous for the young ones round creeks and rivers.

Regading not seeding improved varieties of common bermuda into a vegetatively produced hybrid bermuda lawn, I imagine the bermuda experts may say the hybrid bermuda is a much higher quality lawn; it looks a lot better than a seeded bermua lawn, or so I'll guess that's what they'll say. I'm not an expert on bermuda though. I know zoysia much better since that's what I grow. Zoysia looks sooo good and it's much less work than bermuda. For example, you don't need to cut zoysia as low or as often as bermuda to keep zoysia looking good. You can even cut zoysia as high as 2 inches, just once a week, or even less frequently in times of drought. During this last drought, I only needed to cut my zoysia after 5 weeks! Zoysia doesn't grow vertically as fast as bermuda. Bermuda grows tall like a weed :-)

Sometimes you need to know the exact weed before you can kill it. In this case, whatever it is, it should be treatable with a broadleaf weed killer like Ortho Weed-B-Gone. WBG will leave your grass alone and only kill the broadleaf plants. Watch your overspray because most of the plants in your yard are broadleaf. You only need to mist the leaves of the weeds. WBG is not a soil drench. Some weeds take a little time to die. The Weed-B-Gone works by hyperactivating the growth hormone in the plant. It dies by exhausting it's energy reserves. So it will look healthy for several days...and then it's dead. Unfortunately it is too late to seed for this year in your area. Once the weeds are gone, you will be left with bare soil which will attract more weeds. This is especially true if you seed in the spring. You might try dormant seeding to help 'densify' the turf. With dormant seeding you seed in the winter hoping that the seed will sprout early before the weed seeds are sprouting.
