texas-weed - question on scalping and pre-emergent

TW, should the pre-emergent in the spring go down prior to the first mowing/scalping of the season? If afterwards, how long to wait for the first fertilizer feeding?

Prior if your timing is correct. Pre-M is best done in two steps in the spring, and two in the fall/winter.

First spring application is right after the Forsytia blooms, and repeated 6 to 8 weeks later, which in Allen would be in March some time. Mother Nature will tell you. Find the Forsythias in your neighborhood and watch. Better yet plant one.

As soon as you see the first sprigs of Bermuda greening up is the time to scalp, hate that word as it gives the wrong impression. Then you wait another week or so till you see the yard about 50 to 75% greened up hit it with your first balance fertlizer aplication. The another week or two passes and that should be about the right time for the second Pre-M applacation.

Thanks. I hit my berumda with plenty of nitrogen last year and it still has not gone fully dormant yet and it's Jan. I planted cavalier zoyzia last summer in the front yard, and that is still 60% green. If there is still some green in March, will scalping effect it any? I started using a reel mower last season. I plan to scalp at 3/8 then mow at 5/8 for the season. I've just been amazed at the slow transition to dormancy.

The product has pendimethalin not Dimension as it's pre emergent element. Zoysia being a warm season grass is not doing much of anything at this current soil temp. So any N, P, or K would not be very productive. As far as weed pressure goes winter annual are in season. Clover is a perennial weed and can be controlled with a 2,4,D product. Think of pre emergent as a window of coverage. Use flowering shrubs to indicate soil temp in your area. Forsythia is the best example to indicate when to pre emerge your turf. When it blooms you can bet the soil temp is high enough for weed germination. Dimension will give you 6 to 8 months of coverage compair to 6 to 8 weeks from Pendi. When you put the pre emerge down the clock starts ticking.

i've been thinking for the past couple of years just to get into a quartely application of pre-emergent Now you are getting smart. FWIW it is time for pre-m in DFW, in fact this year a little late. If done now remember you will need another application in 12 weeks.

I put some down on August 16th and again yesterday. I hope the aplication yesterday wasn't a waste of money. I had henbit last winter and bad poa in the spring. Not it was not a waste of money, kind of depends on what type, but the secret to successful pre-emergence use is succession applications spread 8 to 10 weeks apart.

TW, you mentioned "Pre-M" does the same two step process apply to Dimension as well?

Also, pertaining to your Fall/Winter application recommendation. Could you explain the timing on that one too? Would now (Feb 5th) be considered a good time to apply the second half of the Fall/Winter application?

I guess it could if applied one application real early, and another near Summer. I really like AMAZE because it is one of the longest acting pre-emergence on the market, followed by Demension.

Typically with Amaze you can use it twice a year, once in Spring and again in Fall for year round protection. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rainfall, you can go 3 times a year. Just be careful using Amaze around trees and shrubs, or use Demension.

Amaze is that bad around trees? Does Lesco pre em 0-0-7 from orange box store contain Dimension?
