My Brother's Birthday GIft

This is my first attempt at a totem. It is going to be a gift to my brother. He loves green glass and hummingbirds. So I borrowed one of his hummingbirds and put it inside the octogon piece of the totem. I think he'll like it.

Lucky brother! That will look very pretty in the garden (as it does in yours). Not too obtrusive like a colorful one but adds a bit of sparkle and texture to the garden. I am always amazed at the items that get incorporated into totems. The "cage" for the hummingbird looks like the shade from an outdoor light fixture. Did I guess right?

I take it you want to put a layer of OM down for the fall? You could skip the peat moss, find some free horse manure already mixed w/ hay(bedding) and use the gift card for some seeds. Maybe some perlite or potting soil for starting seedlings next spring.

I think so too and Mom has another that is my Grandpa's Mom that I'm going to get also. Grandma was playing in a hay loft and fell, someone had left the pitch fork out and she fell on it. She was very lucky it didn't kill her, especially with medicine at that time. The bandage is about a foot wide at her natural waist. It's why they believed she stopped growing then also. I think she was 4'10", I know we always measured ourselves growing up against her. We were really pleased to finally be taller:) I passed her up about the 7th or 8th grade. She wasn't fat, she was very petite, but she saw herself that way and heartily disliked this pic. It had to have been framed at some time, there was some paper attached to the sides.

Pesky, you made me laugh with that story!! Actually his sister, his dad and I ended up 'giving' my son our entire night's sleep on his birthday, which was a school night for all of us. As I mentioned his sister drove him and 3 friends to a local party area (Coconut Grove for those who know Miami) for College Night which is every Thursday. They called her to come pick them up at 1 am(!), and of course I couldn't get to sleep till everybody was back home at close to 2 am. Then one of his buddies ended up staying over at our house since he wasn't in any shape to drive. Buddy started wandering around at 4 am, waking my husband up who then had to put him back to bed. Husband naturally couldn't get back to sleep...and wake up time for daughter and me is 6:15 am anyway. Yawn. When all was said and done nobody got much sleep but my son had a great and safe birthday! The last few years since my kids have grown up, I've just taken them out to dinner. This year was different, though. My son was across the country, in tech school for the Air Force, so I asked him what he wanted. I ordered some sweat pants he requested through Amazon and had them sent to him. He lost a lot of weight in basic so needed something that fit. Now my daughter's birthday is this Friday so I told her I'd get her a new pair of boots since her favorite pair are falling apart. She hasn't told me which ones she wants so it may be late.

CUTE idea with the hummingbird. Your brother is going to LOVE this. I have a couple of small hummingbird figurines stored that I've been wondering about using somehow, so you've given me some ideas here.

Well, that is just too sweet! Great idea in adding the hummingbird in the "Cage"! That is very unique and a new idea for us all! Maybe he will take a pic for us after it gets in its new home???!!! blessings-sherri
