Potatoes of sweet potato vine

Pulled these out of the pot on front steps to change up to pansies and snaps. Buried these spuds in the veggie patch. The one on the left is new from cutting this year, the big one was there since spring of '11, as a cutting.

Cool, tho of course theyre not related to true potatoes (solanums)

They're delicious! We ate some last year. I couldn't tell any difference between these and the ones you buy at the store. There's so many things I want to do with this plant next year, so I replanted these instead of cooking them.

Mr. Brown Thumb says that the ornamental ones have been bred for their lovely foliage so that's why the potato is pithy and woody, whereas the sweet potatoes bred for their potato production are tastier ... in the tuber portion. http://mrbrownthumb.blogspot.com/2010/10/ornamental-sweet-potato-vine.html. Sooo if they're both Ipomoeas then one should grow them for what they intend to harvest and use for their tables ... either leaves or tubers? I have Puerto Rico sweet potatoes growing and will have to try eating the young leaves and shoots. This is a very interesting discussion because I have been curious about eating the foliage for a while. Does anyone know if all Ipomoeas (morning glories) have edible leaves? Thanks to you all for the information in this thread.

I dug up ONE tuber a couple of weekends ago. I know there must be more, but I couldn't reach way down inside that planter box - it's about 4' deep. It was about 6" long and about 6" in circumference. Not too big, really. But I put it in my cabinet where I store my potatoes. Looks like a regular old sweet potatoe to me. Moni - yours is HUMONGOUS! Susan

When I moved to texas, I asked someone on this forum about whether I could bring bearded iris bulbs. Well, they said yes, and they were right. With help from this forum, making the bed was really easy. I recently wrote a poem about this for our HOA newsletter. Iris beds grows easily, and by the time you need to break-up the bulbs (about two years), it should be time to replant a tree...and maybe leave some iris' behind. Here's my poem. The Iris Bed The Iris sits up from his bed, a purple beard on stately head, His needs to grow are very slight, not too much water and lots of light, So plant him in a sunny spot, and worry not if it gets hot, HeÂll bring with him sea of green, and rise in Spring just to be seen. An easy way to build an iris bed is the abbreviated Lasagna MethodÂshave away the Bermuda sod, create a raised border, line the bed with cardboard, put in 4 inches of Landscape Mix (low nitrogen), and set the bulbs very shallow, exposing their" backs".

It's time to harvest. I'm pulling mine and digging up that morsels of goodness. Not all potatoes will flowers. I usually get at least a plant of two that does but it doesn't matter. Once they start to die off it's harvest time. Do it soon or the rodents will be digging them up to get the moisture.

Botanically known as Ipomoea batatas, the sweet potato is a member of the morning glory family, Convolvulaceae and is closely related to the morning glory vine (I. purpurea) and the leafy vegetable, kangkong (I. aquatica). It is not related to the true potato, which is a member of the tomato family, Solanaceae.

There are ornamental sweet potato varieties grown exclusively for their decorative foliage. These ornamental varieties may also produce edible underground tubers but they are usually less prolific and tubers are usually smaller and not as palatable as those that have been bred and grown exclusively for their tuber.

I would wonder about any possible pesticide used by the greenhouse growers.
They can be used to start new plants, they root easily.
