I would forego the styro & compost. The styro will just cause you to need to water (and repot) more often. Fertilizer is much more efficient at delivering nutrients in a pot which is not a large enough environment for the natural decomposition process to appropriately sustain/fortify plants. Also, as decomposition happens, the result is tiny, water-logged, airless particles (mud.) More about soil/watering. A Dracaena grows so slowly, an occasional dose of weak fertilizer should be more than enough even in the leanest (nutritionally) mix. The mix you described, or any with 30% compost would be too dense for my confidence. The goal of a coarser, grittier mix is to eliminate tiny particles of any type, peat, sand, clay, silt. Think moist particles that have some tiny air spaces between them so there is also oxygen, even when saturated to capacity. It's going way beyond my area of experience to give you a specific recipe since I break the rules I espouse but there are a glut of discussion here about this. I would follow the advice established in those. It gets perpetuated because it works well for so many people/plants. There is a pic of such a mix here, in post dated Wed, Oct 20, 10 at 9:45.

Lesprit...How long have you had Lucky Bamboo in the tank? You mentioned no contaminates. Are you adding chemicals in the water, like No-Chlor? How much water covers each plant? Are roots completely submerged under water? You said the window is completely covered. Is your plant getting any light source? If leaves are paling, your LB isn't getting enough light. LB doesn't require blazing sun, but needs light.. Leaves pale for different reasons, but I'd bet, 'if your tank/plant is in a dark room,' lack of light is the problem. If you remove the curtain, will it be too cold for your Beta? Toni

IF you do want to start new plants in the future of this and/or many caned plants! (those in the picture look great and wouldn't need cutting for quite some time.) You would cut the cane horizontally just above one of the "rings". (With a very sharp knife. You don't want to crush the cane or make a ragged cut) From the top part of the cane, cut the small piece off, on an angle, from the original cut to the next ring up (about an inch..give or take) Remove the leaves up to the point that will go into water or soil. A new shoot, sometimes more) will grow from the stem still in the pot. Sometimes a little hormone powder helps rooting to take place. I fyou plant in soil, keep a bit moist, but not wet and use a very well draining soil mixed with extra perlite.

Which city exactly, it ranges from Desert to mountains in "southern, California". Assuming youre in a temperate area like San Diego - Put it outside where it will get an hour or two of morning sun only. Keep an eye on the pots moisture, these will usually wilt (droop) when they want more water. Once it bounces back with new growth, begin fertilizing. Can't imagine it's very cold there, unless youre in northern LA part of "southern, California", in that case leave it indoors in an east or north facing window.
