How tall will the Dracaena Sanderiana get?

I just recently purchased one from Wal-Mart to replace a plant that my naughty cat ate, and I was wondering how tall it will get. I am not sure of the name of the plant I had to replace. It was similar in size and shape to a spider plant, but the leaves were thicker, like a succulent. Anyway, it is located on landing to the side of my bathtub, so I don't want something that is going to get too large there. Any info would be appreciated.

I am aware of some over 8' tall. They root easily. If it gets too tall, you can cut it and start over any time. It will grow a new shoot below the cut. The cutting will get roots and you will have 2 plants.

I asked this question in another post and did not get an answer, so I hope I can ask it here again.

To propogate do you take the shoots off of the side of the stalk and put them in water. That is what I was thinking.

From what I read in your post it seems that I should cut the stalk and bury it under water?

ishuku, I'd decide where I want to cut the roots on the long side of that L. I would use a sharp knife or heavy scissors. I would cut straight across the container; and not worry if I do not get all the roots. Leave the plant in the container long enough for the cut roots to start branching. Addition of organic matter in the form compost in the area of the cut roots will help this process. Monitor the root branching progress; and I would guess that after about 8 weeks, you will be able to lift the plant with its smaller root ball, cut away any remaining long roots and set it in the new container and add more compost to set it firmly in place. It is similar to root pruning a field grown tree; a quarter circle (12 o'clock to 3 o'clock; 3 to 6; 6 to 9 etc) at monthly intervals. New feeder roots proliferate inside the pruning circle so that when the whole tree is lifted and set in its new location, the shock is minimized.

Hi vieja. Dracaena sanderiana is actually a member of the genus Dracaena ans is related to the Lily family, despite it's bamboo-like appearance. The plant will live happily for many years in water. Eventually you will want to transplant it in potting soil, but for now just make sure to keep the water level up and give it some good light (no direct sun). Go easy on the fertilizer until you've potted it in soil. These plants will live for years if taken care of. The canes themselves will not grow any longer, but the crowns sprouting out of the sides will continue to grow upwards indefinitely! If at some point you decide they are too tall, you can lop them off and root them in water to create more plants. The old canes will sprout new crowns in a couple of months. Good luck! This is indeed very popular in offices and restaurants since they tolerate low light and are very easy to care for.

How can I propagate my lucky bamboo? You can take cuttings, dip the cut into rooting hormone, and them put the stem into soil. After a few weeks, the stem will start to root. Many people do this without root hormone for successfully rooted cuttings as well. Does the stalk still grow after its been cut? The stalk will not get taller. It will, however, sprout new shoots most likely near the top of the plant. Those shoots will continue to grow taller. How long do they live? Much of the answer to that question I suppose is up to the individual grower. I have read up to a few weeks or even many months. Mine has lasted for a couple of years and is still going strong. I am also expecting many more years from my lucky bamboo plants. Another answer I have read is that lucky bamboo plants will last indefinitely. That almost sounds like longer than ourselves at least. Perhaps they last forever if they are great master lucky bamboo. ;-)

It's awesome! It's perfectly normal for a specimen of its' age in a pot inside. The foliage near the top could be a bit sparse from being above the window, getting less light. Sorry for the delayed reply, errand day yesterday. There's a bunch of pics of older plants here: http://allthingsplants.com/plants/view/76304/Corn-Plant-Dracaena-fragrans/ Even in a 3-story atrium, the lower parts of the trunks become naked over time, as older leaves are lost, similar to the growth of any large tree. Whenever a trunk becomes too tall, it can be cut where one would like to see a new side branch. New growth usually comes from a spot near the cut. So, the lower the cut is made, the more room a new branch has to grow before getting too tall again. Sticking the cut piece(s) back in the pot can help yield a more full look, but trying to hide the trunks isn't necessary, under the umbrella of "normal" but perfectly fine if that's just what you prefer to look at. If you go in the house plant forum and search for Dracaena within that forum, you'll also see tons of other, similar discussions, with many more pics. If none of this is appealing, you can "make" your own new plant from this one. Cut off the pieces that are the most attractive to you, stick them in a pot, pushing the trunks all the way to the bottom of the pot so they will be sturdily upright. Using an uneven number, cut to different heights, would yield an instantly bushy-looking "new" plant. Some of the existing leaves are usually discarded when doing cuttings like that, but I've never had one fail to take root and start growing great new leaves within a few months. A nursing home or university would probably love to have the rest of it, if you prefer that idea & want to ditch the stump/root ball. Keep asking questions (here or in house plants,) if you have more of them, until you feel confident & can decide on a plan that's right for what you want to end up with.

Don't know the answer to the propagation question. How long does it take to get to that 8' height? As you can see, that would be way too big for this spot.

Nice picture, the plants look great!
Your pot will do for a long while. They do not usually grow that fast.
You can cut the stalk or new shoots to propogate. The stalk is already rooted, just wait for new shoot/shoots to grow out.
Put the bottom end of the cutting in water and wait for it to take root. You can also pot it in soil and wait for it to root.

It would take many years for it to get too big for that location.

As far as propagation, the soft leafy shoots from the stalk generally won't root, you need part of the stalk with a node to root.

IF you do want to start new plants in the future of this and/or many caned plants! (those in the picture look great and wouldn't need cutting for quite some time.) You would cut the cane horizontally just above one of the "rings". (With a very sharp knife. You don't want to crush the cane or make a ragged cut) From the top part of the cane, cut the small piece off, on an angle, from the original cut to the next ring up (about an inch..give or take) Remove the leaves up to the point that will go into water or soil. A new shoot, sometimes more) will grow from the stem still in the pot. Sometimes a little hormone powder helps rooting to take place. I fyou plant in soil, keep a bit moist, but not wet and use a very well draining soil mixed with extra perlite.
