hardy fig's?

I have been growing fig's for the last 20years or so. When i first started living in the Chicago area i joined the Nafex group there and met some of the best people with a lot knowledge about just about any fruits,but mostly for the colder climats like 7 to4 zones. From them did i got a sion of a fig called "Hardy Chicago". A fine tasting fig that fruit even on new growth.I have this fig ever since here in Arkansas,Which i cut down every 3td year,same as desert king and my magnolia and latturella. These 4 fig,s are my only fig's i want. In total i now have between them about 16 to 20 tree's.That enough for me and my neighbors and their friend's.I trade with my local nursery nearby for myfertilizers and other stuff, he get little tree's.

I grow Figs too. But I think it could be easier if I don't live in Zone 7. Like if I lived in Zones 8,9 or 10 grow figs will be easy. May be not zone 10 because I grow Apricot too. But you can grow in any zone if you have the patience and dedication to protect it from the Freezing Weather. Even I am in Zone 7 I grow Banana too. It is not easy but hay I enjoy it.

I grow Celeste, Hardy Chicago, Violette de bordeaux and Verte. I know somebody who lives few bloks frow me. She grows Celeste, Hardy Chicago, Brown Turkey, Desert King, Tashkent, Marceilles, Violette de bordeaux, LSU and some others. I don't think she prunes them much. Most of them are quite big trees with 3-4 tranks, not bushes. She has a fenced yard and it is well protected from winds with house from one side and woods from the other side.
My figs get more dieback than hers.

I am in zone 6 but I am looking for things hardy to zone 7. The palm i have is a Saw palmetto from what I can tell from the parent plant. I would be glad to send pics of the parent plant....can't seem to find out how to email directly to people yet. I am in charleston sc so as far as the figs hardiness, it got down to the low twenties and snowed last year and it showed no damage and had a ton of figs. I am unsure of the variety of my fig. It is red inside with greenish brown skin when ripe. On all my stuff I am happy to send first.

ninovarga... Fig trees evolved in the warm, sunny, and dry climates of the Mid-Eastern countries. Your "Hardy Chicago" will die if not protected, so do not be fooled by claims of hardiness. It might be hardier than some other varieties, but it could/might still die...but, just slower. Anecdotal stories are great, and sometimes growing the tree in a warmer micro-climate, or a protected spot, will keep this variety alive, but all it will take is one bad Winter and your tree might be gone...killed by the harsh weather That's why most growers take the pains to protect their fig trees. Also, If you live in a warmer climate that has an extended growing season, you might also get figs to ripen with the extra heat, and sun. I have been growing my trees, since 2007, in large containers, and I store them in a storage shed until mid-March. I have never lost any trees...and I'm in Zone-7b, but I usually get warmer weather. Jan-Feb are the worst months. Growing in-ground trees, unprotected, in cold climates, is a very chancy thing to do. Nature always trumps Man's efforts. Are you a gambler? Hope this might help. Frank

The info you mentioned on the tag is wrong. There is no way it can survive at -20F. Also, survival at -10F is iffy unless you cover/insulate it very elaborately. Many in Zone 6 have grown it in the ground but needs covering up with insulation. You can search here with 'winter protection' to learn how to arrange for such protection. Even then there is probability of die-back to the ground in some winters. The survival in this case will mean sprouting back from the ground (from roots). Sometimes growing from the ground after die-back to the ground gets delayed thus minimizing chances for ripe fruit from the new growth and more so in location with cool or short summer.

Also a tangle foot user but not every year, use to apply directly on bark it really stops the non flying crawling critters and works excellent on single or a few multiple trunk fig trees in container. Will eventually wear away and leave black ring that is not eye candy and will raise the bark somewhat if applied bare on same spot yearly, Best to use something that can wrap snug around trunk as ant can and will crawl under anything loose. Also used on our large Princeton American elm as one day i was admiring the tree and noticed the leaves were getting holy looking around saw many crawling up the trunk so the tanglefoot was applied directly with no harm other than a black ring which wore away as i used it only once . Ants here are not a problem yearly same with the yellow jackets. One year they were terrible when the fig plants were ripening the fruit ,one morning they were swarming so many of them like out of a horror movie so i took a hose sprayed and sprayed and did a dance on them when they fell to the patio would have made a funny video. Its just not a yearly thing that happens here. Some years ants some years yellow jackets most years nothing just mother nature doing its thing i suppose. Martin

I love figs, I now have over 240 different varieties that I grow here in Pennsylvania.
This year has been the best year for fig in a long time. I picked the breba crop starting in June, and I have started picking the Main crop by end of July which is at least 3 weeks earlier than usual.
Here's my favorite fig that I picked yesterday...
