What to expect is; A. It will either make it thru unscathed, which is very possible, depending on your lowest temps and how well it was wrapped. B. the top growth could freeze to the ground in which case it will regrow but it will also cut down on how many figs it will have. C. It might not get froze but voles or mice can chew the branches to the ground and sometimes even chew up the roots killing the tree. I've had that happen to my own and a friend had a 6 foot tall tree completely disappear from rodents. You never know until it's time to do the unwrapping. You can buy stuff to keep rodents from chewing the tree, I think it's called "Scoot". If you can't find it you can grind up garlic and rub it on the trunk and lower branches. I couldn't find anything in the stores around here so I went with the garlic, this is my test year for that too. Be prepared for the worst case scenario. Best of luck to you

Hi Biscotti, I don't know about the roots being invasive, or not, but recently, I read where tree roots don't get under the slabs of houses. They go to the slab and then turn aside. I've always heard differently, but the article said it's not the roots that cause the cracks in foundations, but the fact that those roots suck up all the moisture around the foundation and that causes the ground to collapse and the foundation to crack. Does anyone know anything about this? I don't think lining a hole with bricks would do a thing to contain the roots, though, because roots go out tiny and have the habit of getting through most anything in time. I do wonder if the fig tree would like the bricks because they seem to like growing around stone. I wish someone would address that, as well, please. I'm so sorry, but I never saw the post because we started having a lot of trouble with GW locking up and I stopped coming here. We've been using Mozilla Thunderbird for a few months, now, and it seems to be making a difference, but time will tell. Giuseppe, It seems strange that a tree that doesn't even die back at 0 degrees F, completely winterkills at -12. You'd expect it to come back from the roots. That's what prompted my previous questions. I thought it might have been too young, or that the roots might not have anchored in, and the plant heaved and dried out. Doesn't sound like it from your answer, though. Was there any indication of anything else going on besides the cold?
