Problem with pawpaw-Need advice

Hi,

I have two young pawpaw trees the first variety is Mango and the second with the problem is Ruby Keenan. Just after two days of steady hard rain I noticed the 2nd tree only was developing the spots shown in that attached photos. Can anyone tell me what it is and what caused it plus how to rid the tree of the problem.

looks similar to sepatoria leaf spot, it I believe is a fungus and happens after prolonged periods of wet/cold weather, nothing to worry about IMO.

My loquat gets something that looks like that every Spring and it goes away during our dry summers. I agree with MoleX.

I take it you dont have a new home warranty? (They are required where I am up in Canada, but let me tell you, that 'warranty' isnt all its cracked up to be either). If you dont have a warranty, best bet it to get a 3rd party expert (or two) and serve your builder with copies and politely ask him again to remedy. If not, pursue small claims. (Sadly these are workmanship, not code issues, or I'd suggest you sick your building inspector on him). Good luck, I get what you are saying about yoru house - I'm waiting for a new home warranty claim to be resolved - spring came and my drywall got ruined due to a water intrusion issue! The warranty rep and GC are speaking to each other, but refuse to speak to me. (I have to wait for 'paperwork to come in the mail', grrrr...)

At this point, I would take the money and then 'live with it' for as long as possible. I would counter offer with, "Return my money and I will take the necessary steps to complete my floor project on my own." I can pretty much guarantee they will JUMP at this option. Your floor is fully functional with multiple attempts to get it to the colour you want. I would hate to see any more sanding done at this point. I know it isn't perfect, but it *might be "good enough". The colour you are attempting to create is EXTREMELY difficult to achieve on red oak. The Bona Craft Oil colours are ALL showing 'yellow' tones on white oak. That means there will be yellow tones showing through on red oak. Bona Craft oil advertises 'oiled floors with a finish'. An oil floor is OFTEN yellowish once completed. I'm wondering if the ambering is coming from the Craft Oil itself...simply because that is how it has been designed. The rest of the refinishing issues have to do with colour acceptance over areas that *might have received patch material...and patch (wood patch) will take colour VERY differently. I know this isn't what you were hoping for. I know this is very upsetting - especially after all the attempts to get this done - you will need to find your personal 'cut off' point. When do YOU decide that enough is enough? I would ask for my money back....which is probably what the company would consider acceptable...and move in and move on. Once the furniture is back into place and trim has been put back into place (etc.) you will find 90% of these issues will be hidden.

Rusty, I'll bring the discussion back here, the PM was only to send you my phone number where the bots couldn't harvest it. You asked what else I grow. I have planted many plums, with limited success, but I continue to try new varieties. If you are going to plant plums plant a Mount Royal. You will not get plums every year, but when you do they are fabulous and abundant. If you time a visit for mid September you can taste some, I have a decent crop coming this year. Although every thing is running a little late again this year and they need a full season. It is claimed that mount royal has many strains and some are freestone or at least semi-freestone. My original bought locally(supplied by Bylands) is a full cling-stone. Very delicious, but during the on years we try to dry some and it is very labour intensive. I planted a second mount royal this year(from nut cracker in Quebec) hoping for freestone plums. If you are going to plant any hybrid plums in the future, plant a native plum next spring - they are slow growing and it takes them a while to start blooming and pollinating your hybrids. I also have planted a dozen apple varieties. Not all of them have borne fruit yet, but all of them have survived. I have not lost any zone 4 rated apples, where many zone 4 rated plums are no longer with me. The berries are the quickest and the most dependable. Raspberries, saskatoons, and haskap produce every year. I also have some sour cherries with a decent crop for the first time this year.

You may also want to put up some kind of shade for the first few years. I have one that was in full sun, and it has never grown, gave all kinds of problems. I planted 3 in the edge of the woods, near a hickory tree that I am planning to take down, so it would shade them. They are growing like crazy!

Agree with above that the spots are most likely signs of a fungal disease. The questions to consider are whether this will occur only sporadically under unusually wet conditions and to what degree it is setting back the growth of the tree and whether it will also damage the fruit in the future. Your idea of a dormant copper spray sounds sensible and should not hurt, though it may not be effective and if this proves to be a recurrent problem that damages the plant or fruit, you may need to consider spraying growing-season antifungals. The good news is that pawpaws can most often be grown without the need for this. So for now I would do nothing but observe.

I've had the same beneficial experience with shade and pawpaws, though at Z5 and with a plant that size he may not particularly need it there now. Shading also hasn't fixed all of my various pawpaw's assorted problems. I do not find them easy to grow in the south, short of trying many and accepting a fair number of losses.

The same has happened on my Ruby Keenan every season since I grafted it. It performed best this year through July without leaf spot, but we were also amidst a historic drought with low humidity here in Northwest Arkansas. We've had significant rain since late July, and the leaves are again succumbing to the leaf spot. I'm not sure it's worth keeping this variety. None of the other seven trees have this weakness.
