Honeycrisp Apple Tree Problem

I have a Honeycrisp apple tree, just bearing fruit this year for the first time. The problem is that some of the leaves are turning yellow already, and falling off. This condition seems to affect entire branches. It doesn't seem to match the description of fireblight I've read about. None of my other 18 or so apple trees has anything like this going on.

Anyone have an idea what is causing this? And what should I do about it, if anything?

Hi Ziggro-
I'm trying to understand "some leaves" and "entire branch". Is it just a few leaves over the whole branch which turn completely yellow and then fall off? If so, this is normal. Later in the season, the tree will shed its smaller "baby" leaves that first emerged in the spring.
If all the leaves on the branch are turning yellow then perhaps it's something more serious and maybe a pic would help?

honeycrisp have whats called "honeycrisp yellows" Mine has it. I dont think it causes it to shed its leaves though. How far north are you? Can you give us your location? (a town would be helpfull) and we are just shooting in the dark with out a pic.

That is perfectly normal. The "little bumps" are root initials -- if it were buried in moist soil, they could grow into roots. The "bulbous" shape is normal for some dwarfing rootstock, I have some mature mini-dwarf trees that topped out at about 5-6 feet tall, and they have a pronounced large knot just below the graft union.

OK, we're now on the third year of the honeycrisp and there are no apples. It got only a few blooms, but no fruit developed. Meanwhile, the snow apple, which was purchased as a polinator, has a number of apples. I haven't fertilized any of my fruit trees (a peach and two cherries in addition to the apples). Maybe this is the problem with the honeycrisp. The cherries aren't producing, either, but I didn't expect them to this soon. The sweet one was decimated by japanese beetles last year and the sour is a standard not a dwarf or semi-dwarf so I expect it's got more years of growing before it produces fruit. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that and should be doing something to encourage fruiting (besides spraying, which we are doing for the first time this year). This is an extremely helpful forum. I have a single Honeycrisp on M26, and it is definitely a non-vigorous tree, which so far seems really nice for my small orchard. Very little pruning so far required. It has, however, grown very large, high-quality apples. I am extremely pleased with the fruit quality. It has also resisted any scabbing on the leaves, but a few apples did have some depressed black spots near the blossom end which is either scab or I don't know what. This tree is becoming my favorite, at least for the earlier season non-keepers.

You will want at least 2 trees of different varieties for cross pollination purposes, however keep in mind that bees don't stop at the property line. If there are other apple trees within a quarter mile of you, or even a half mile, particularly flowering crabs, you should have no pollination problems even with a single apple tree or variety if that is all you want. In this case, I think you probably want to plant more, having compatible pollen may make for a bigger fruit set (which will then be thinned later), but you really don't have to make compatibility a serious concern. Plant what you want if there are other apples in the area.

My digi-camera is down right now, so no pictures unless I can borrow one.

All the leaves on a branch are turning yellow. This has happened on one major branch and a couple of smaller ones.

I live in Montana, in a small town in a mountain valley located not far from Helena, the capital. Our elevation is about 4700'.
