Yay Ceresone! I'm glad to hear that Isis Candy is your favorite because that's another that she sent me. I spent some time looking up opinions on the web, and Isis Candy was a popular one. Also, several people recommended Black Cherry and Coyote. Sungold was the only cherry that I wanted that she didn't have but I should have plenty so that's ok. I have an itch to try some cherry tomato salad recipes and I wanted different colors. I have unnamed red cherry tomatoes that volunteer every year and they haven't come up yet. Some are only marble sized but I like the small ones anyway. I was tempted to order some of the very tiny ones, like pea sized, but I didn't find many people that actually liked the way they tasted. Question: If I have four or five kinds of cherry tomatoes and save seeds from them this summer, will they cross? I think they're all heirloom varieties.

Grace, I am sure you will be swimming in tomatoes before you know it, especially with your long growing season. Pupilla, Cool! I have never heard of that strain. I just looked it up. Looks like you may be getting some whoppers. The info I just read says 1 to 3 pounds each. Sey, I cut one open and tried it. The interior tasted great and very similar to Sungold and Sunsugar but unfortunately the skin was really tough and hard. I cut open a Sunsugar because I thought it might be interesting to observe the similarities and differences. I didn't grow Sungold this year so I couldn't compare it with that variety.

What to expect? It depends, you may or may not get the first crop off of them. But i would keep them going to experiment with and learn from. Starting some time in early-mid September you can line the ground with black plastic, it'll keep the ground a little warmer. I would also give them a weak shot or two of liquid ferts this month, something with lower "N" and higher P & K. As a last ditch resort, late Sept. perhaps, you can disturb their root systems to coax the plant into a ripening stage. You can do this by slicing into the ground with a shovel on a couple of sides, or gently "lifting" the whole plant an inch or so (this is a much riskier method that takes a certain feel to accomplish, but this is the perfect chance for you to experiment with both methods). Otherwise we can hope for an extended season, or be ready to stow away a lot of green tomatoes into a cool basement. They're called "wolf tomatoes" (I guess tomatoes used to be called "wolf peaches" by some) and they used to escape out of my compost pit and take over a section of my garden. Not as sweet as their parents, but fine to use and free and easy to care for, basically not pull out and pick tomatoes when ripe. They aren't as prolific as hybrids but I ignored that section of the garden and was happy to get a crop from it.
