Orange Growth at base of apple tree

chrissh

I have a 3 year old apple tree and when I cut the long grass away from around the base of the trunk I saw an orange growth at the base of the trunk. The only way I can descriobe it is that it resembled the surface of a lychee in size and "dimplyness". The apples this year also seem to be affected - a lot have brown spots on then about 3mm in diameter.

Does anybody have any idea what is causing this?

I could upload pictures if I knew how to?

thanks

Chris
