Ailing Bonsai tree with fungus: second photo
Comments (2)Nihal: Since noone else has responded, I'll give it a try: what you have is a Ehretia Buxifolia. The old timers, like me, sometimes call it Carmona Microphylla. Commonwise it is a plain old Fukien Tea, and one of the most popular of Bonsai species. You shouldn't have any trouble at all looking it up. I don't have my Bonsai books with me here at work, but it sounds like you may need to make a weak soap solution (just dishwashing liquid and water) in a spritz bottle and spray it frequently. Make sure your pot drains properly. I'm sure the little Fukien loves your Casablanca humidity! Best of luck!...See MoreMy New Hawaiian Umbrella tree
Comments (4)"i saw on a website that you have to clean the roots off and comb them every 4 months???" I would not consider re-potting anywhere near this often. For now simply concentrate on keeping it healthy. This plant requires unusual pruning techniques in order to promote ramification which can be difficult to achieve with this species. It has a strong tendency to simply grow upright with little or no branching. "also pruning i have no ideas how to select the leaves and i am very scared i will clip the wrong one." Are you aware that that this plant has compound leaves? Meaning that what might be mistaken as a leaf is actually only part of the true leaf. The entire cluster is actually one leaf. If the plant is healthy you can promote ramification by removing the leaves by cutting through the stem, leaving the stub in place. The terminal bud must then be removed. Comments (8)Don't worry about the main plant, it will put on new growth soon. Make sure the plant is warm & in good light. You needn't worry about where you cut a scheff back. Leaving foliage on a particular stem is unnecessary. Scheffs retain large amounts of photosynthesizing tissues in stems & produce new leaves & roots quite readily. Stem tip cuttings with all but one or two leaves removed will root quickly in perlite or a porous soil w/o the aid of a rooting hormone. Place cuttings in bright light, but not direct sun. Ideal soil temp about 70* F. Taking tip cuttings will also stimulate back-branching on that stem. You can also cut a portion of stem into 1-1/2 - 2 inch leafless pieces & just lay them atop a moist soil in bright light where they will root. Al...See MoreShould I repot my ailing Meyer lemon tree?
Comments (12)Follow-up, 13 days after re-pot. Unfortunately my tree is in trouble again! Less than a week after repotting, the veins of many of the leaves started to turn yellow. The yellow then spreads outwards, and the leaf drops off (see photos in the link below). It looks like the little tree will lose most of its leaves :-( Searching through the forum, I found a thread from a year ago where Mike had a tree with exactly the same symptoms - did you ever find out what was wrong? I hope your tree survived! Do you think it is just a stress response (I pruned some of the roots when I repotted)? It also developed flower buds, which I know can be a sign of stress (I removed most of these to help the plant concentrate strength). I have had it in the shade since the repot and it has only been watered on the day of the repot and once since. I haven't checked the pH of the new soil, but I made it as per instructions (including lime, although perhaps I didn't include enough?). Would it be worth checking the pH? On the positive side, I have noticed a few tiny new leaves forming at the end of a couple of the branches (but not lower down on the branches). Do you think the tree will drop all it's leaves and then recover? Or is it a goner? Yours hopefully, Lindsay PS I have some Foliage Pro due to be delivered next week that I planned to start using, if the tree is still alive...
