Pics of our little wooded area...

DH started clearing all the weeds out of the woods behind our house about three summers ago. This area was covered in briar bushes and weeds up to your neck! There were old burning barrels and other pieces of garbage and rubage just thrown in here. Jer has been mowing it faitfully and we threw down grass seed and the grass is filling in well.

My Pap was here one day digging ditches for French Drain and we got him to level a section off for us to put a fire pit and possibly even to tent up here sometime. I also have a swing I took from SIL up there but I never finished painting it all green. It sits across from the bank, under the apple tree. I'll have to get more pictures to show you the fire pit and all that. We need to burn something in it to get rid of the dang weeds in it! LOL Maybe this weekend!

When Pap made the flat spot, it left this bank and we were trying to put something on it so it won't wash out all the time. DH and I decided on hostas and ferns because they give you a wooded area feel. We had the two varigated hostas and 4 ferns in up until Sunday and then we put in three new hostas. We're trying to keep the water from washing the dirt out by using sticks, logs and rocks so it stays natural. It's a work in progress!

The first picture is DS's work. He picked this pansy at Lowe's a few weeks ago for 25Â¢ and wanted to do something different with it. We have about a dozen cinder blocks up there so we thought we could use them to hold the plants. We'll see how long they last before the rabbits find them! LOL (Oh, and DD just had to jump in! She doesn't get that it's WARM out and you wear shorts so she insists on jeans and then takes her shirt off! LOL But she told me I wasn't allowed because I have boobies...kids! And she also got a lesson in why you don't wear high heels in the woods! She had on her plastic play high heels! LOL)

I can't wait to see the progress we make by the end of summer!

These are taken from further down in the yard looking up at the whole thing. We own about another acre up behind the fence :)

Oh! Your Children are ADORABLE!!!! My DD used to want to wear "heel highs and kneelons" like Mommy!!! Way to reclaim!!! We've been working on a 1/4acre of tiered hill in our back yard, I call it the back 40. Removed all the broom and wow there is a nice area to work with, hmmm...a pond, walkways, plants...fenceing to keep the ratwiellers in(they think that 1/2acre isn't big enough for them, 6lb and 9lb dogs!) They chased 6 deer out of the yard!!! Too Funny!!!

Wow, thanks for the information- I've never had that kind of luck with getting ModPodge to harden. You may very well be right-- it could be it was either too damp or not warm enough in the house. The nice thing about sealing over ModPodge or other glue products is that if you get enough layers over it, the decoupage has a sort of recessed/inlaid feel to it. Hey guys, just following up. Thanks everyone for your input. TheFoxesPad, i very much imagine a similar use .. for me or my kids! A few general obeservations: 1. I am thinking more about tying it to our house, and to my surprise that means white trim 2. There is a part of our house, a small room off the living room, with very similar dimensions. It is stone about 6.5 ft up then clerestory. It has a gable roof. 3. Before our reno, the house has a very lovely little solarium at the side entrance. We had to demo it to make a mudroom and craftroom (believe me I hated doing it). My DH save the Marvin french doors and oversized windows. We'd love to use them, although whatever facade gets them will really change in character, so still mulling it 4. I want to emphasize its garden setting and path as much as the pond 5. The contractor says if we use too much glass it will be very hot in a stone house ... 6. Decided against post and beam, too much visual weight for the space. Probably shiplap ceiling, painted. Floor should be tile --- maybe antiqued saltillo 7. Our house has a cedar shake roof. Thinking we should copy it although I like tin or even copper too. 8. I think we will put in a sofa bed for those adult guests who want to stay there, and a small loft with a window for the kids as a reading nook. When we have narrowed done more decisions I will post again for input. In the meantime, thanks!

debelli, the dark cherry paneling is from a house around the corner in our neighborhood. We tried to put in a bid, but found out the bank (it was a foreclosure) had already accepted a bid less than 24 hours before. We were pretty bummed, we really loved all the built in storage in that house. We fell in love with the neighborhood, so we kept looking and found our current house about a month or so later. The yellow-y looking paneling with the table and lamp is our actual office, although it's the listing picture. We haven't taken any pictures of this (I'm sitting in it) because we have it jam packed with IKEA office furniture. It's absolutely utilitarian, so definitely wouldn't inspire. DH works from home. Since the rest of the house needs work, I'm leaving this office to last. I'm guessing that we won't do much, no paint, DH doesn't want to change the paneling at all. The houses in my neighborhood were built between the mid eighties to mid nineties and ALL of them have paneling of some type either in an office or formal living room. I believe nearly everyone's paneling is done with birch luan and molding trim. Kathe

Thanks for the many positive comments. Yes, I love my little shed. :) It's 8x12 (tiny) but I think it's just right. We've already had several neighbors ask about it. Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamt of having a little playhouse of my own. This "little mansion" went way over budget but I've assured my husband that when it's time to sell the house, that wee house in back will probably be a major selling point. It even has an attic with a ladder going "upstairs" and operable windows. I like to sit up there and just meditate on life. The deadbolt is an extra-security deadbolt and the little house is connected to the alarm system in our big house. We even had a house-warming party last month to celebrate the completion of our little house!! Here's a picture of the little house my first husband and I built for my two oldest daughter (built from a kit) in the early 1980s. The girls loved it - and so did the neighborhood kids. And now I have one of my own!

What a serene and wonderful place. My sister lives in Dubois PA and your property reminds me of hers. I see you are central PA which could be why. We are old Pennsylvanians ourselves but not central. Enjoy those garden cherubs and teach em all you know!Soon they will be teenagers and they will know it all.

Oh, Calamity, I like to wear high heels and things too..just not in the woods! LOL She kept complaining about how she was tripping and slipping and what not but she kept those shoes on! They're all plastic so I would imagine they would be a pain and man could your feet slip! LOL Good luck with your 'back 40'. :)

Goldenpond, I live near Milesburg..about an hour southeast of Dubois and we're both close to I-80 so yes, the area does probably look similar :)

Don't scare me with the teenage talk. I already have know-it-alls! LOL

I feel for ya girl! We have been trying to clean up our wooded area around our house too. Before our house was built here 30 years ago, there used to be little saw mill here & we've found old parts to the mill & other junk that needs to be cleared out. We used part of one of the pieces as a sort of yard decoration. We've cleared out tons of brush that had grown right up to the house. We also made a camping area to park our camper. We've been at it for 4 1/2 yrs. now & still not done, but we've come a long way. I wonder if we'll ever get there, you probably feel the same way. Hopefully your plants will keep the run-off at a minimum. Perhaps you could make little trenches at the top that form into one that runs into a little pond area at the bottom. Not sure if that would work, but maybe something to consider.

Awesome place, your kids are darling. I wish I had a "back 40" but alas, my little yard is all I can handle and I enjoy it tremendously.
