Suggestions for replacement for grass under orchard

Greeings all,

I've been away from GW for about a year, but now I could use some advice.

We have an orchard of about a dozen trees covering approx. 60' x 40' area (around 2500 sq. ft.). There are shade-loving fescue grasses growing under the trees.

Mowing under them has always been a bear - I inveriably end up with scratches on my body, end up breaking branches, etc.

I am posting a variant of this message in another GW forum.

My options as I see it:

* I could prune higher, but these fruit trees, while mature (over 25 years old), are not all that large. Apple, plum, peach, and cherry.

* Another option which I like more, but will require more work, is to cut out all the grass with a sod cutter and remove it. The question is, what is good to put down? Gravel? (would the alkaline affect the trees much?) Is there something else, something that would look nice?

Any experience anyone has had with this or similar issues would be appreciated.
